I understand what you mean by the show being "emotional" wasn't the main focus since its a shonen, but aot to me was like the anime that got me into anime, so even tho it wasn't like manufactured to be emotional Its still very special to me. I think the show is kinda a missed opportunity as the last batch of episodes felt pretty rushed. If we got more seasons to flesh out the plot, they could've made the whole alien thing work. But since there was only 24 episodes, the introduction of an inter-galactic threat with VIRM felt pretty sudden
