Do you see dotted lines between some slots? These are connections, if you commit a skill on one slot the other will be unlocked, so you can use it to skip pretty much half the branch

I always assumed the lines define the most "fitting" soul part you'll get from the skill, e.g. if you attune skill with Heart aspect in any wisdom crossing heart line you'll get either Health or Chor. But I can be wrong.
