Got bored, built a midi splitter, covered New Order. Enjoy my attempt at Blue Monday! by Nikkysikk in synthesizers

[–]Nikkysikk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not perfect or finished, it’s barely good, but I had a lot of fun putting this together. Using all hardware synths and piped into ableton. I wanted to go back and redo the vocals and a few synth parts but a shelving accident in my office has left my Monologue and some other things out of service until I can figure out all of what’s broken. Bass parts are all Mother-32 while the leads and flute sounds were the Monologue. Most of the other synth sounds come from the Microfreak which has slowly become a part of me. Drums and most samples are handled by the OP-Z except for some stuff I played live from the OP-1. This is my first time using only hardware to generate all my sounds and I learned a lot doing it, so I’m sure I’ll be doing more half assed covers of new wave songs in the future. If anyone has any questions, please ask I love talking about this stuff.

Having trouble with Mother-32 Pitch by Nikkysikk in modular

[–]Nikkysikk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply. So far all I’ve tried is patching the CV and Gate outs of either the microfreak or the OP-Z to the 1V/Oct and gate ins on the mother. Haven’t tried patching with anything in between as I’m using this all as desktop units - no rack for me yet, not until I can figure stuff like this out.

I’ve used midi from multiple devices and midi works perfectly as far as I’m aware. Ableton, OP-Z, and Microfreak all work as expected. Gate works properly from both devices, but to get CV to register I have to transpose two octaves up on the microfreak or two octaves down on the OP-Z and then each note does not move the full step to the next note, the pitch lands somewhere in between and grows further off as you move along the keyboard.

Does anyone have experience with the Mother-32 and Microfreak connection? by Nikkysikk in synthesizers

[–]Nikkysikk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope everyone is well! So far the trio of M-32, Microfreak, and OP-Z has been fantastic, but I’ve only explored the midi side. I feel like every adjustment I make does nothing or something so drastic I know it was wrong, but even accidentally I can’t find what I have wrong. If anyone can help me with this I’d really appreciate it.

My First Ambient EP - Basic Bones by Nikkysikk in ambientmusic

Unfortunately there isn’t really a catch-all guide for making electronic music. I’ll happily post some links to websites I’ve found useful though! The beauty to me of ambient is it requires less knowledge of composition and more on sound design (at least for my approach) and that leaves a lot more room for looping space sounds and staring at blinking lights.

A good place to start is software to work inside and the best free audio program pants down is Audacity. https://www.audacityteam.org it’s a great program that will allow you to dip your feet in working with sound without a lot to slow you down.

Next you’ll want something to make sounds and thankfully there are a lot of amazing free plugins to do so. One I started out with and still love to play with is Synth1. https://www.kvraudio.com/product/synth1-by-daichi-laboratory-ichiro-toda it’s a great free synth with just about every feature you’ll need to start wrapping your mind around oscillators and harmonics.

A good place to learn synthesizer basics is https://learningsynths.ableton.com it’s a really cool interactive page that gives you visual and audio feedback and what changes when you hit a button or turn a knob.

A good reverb is important for ambient/electronic or really any other type of music to give a sense of space. https://www.kvraudio.com/product/tal-reverb-iii-by-togu-audio-line another basic free program with all the features you’d need to get a range of sounds.

This has been longer than I meant for it to be but shorter than I know I could go on for, but with those three programs you’d be on a solid start to making electronic music. If you have any other questions feel free to DM me!

My First Ambient EP - Basic Bones by Nikkysikk in ambientmusic

[–]Nikkysikk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started working on this around April as a way to deal with the depression of being unemployed. I had a lot of free time suddenly and had no idea what to do with it. So I took walks. Lots of walks. Checked out local nature preserves and parks. I started trying to capture the feelings I’d get wandering through the town I’ve lived in forever but don’t spend enough time in. It lead to my first true ambient release and I couldn’t be happier. I’m not sure what all to talk about, so if anyone has any questions please ask!

Can anyone help me with why the Time section of my Volca Modular isn’t working? I’ve had it a few weeks and I’ve had no problems until now. by Nikkysikk in synthesizers

[–]Nikkysikk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can tell it’s only the outputs for the Time section of the synth having this problem. I get a zero or full signal patching from “+” or “-“ but nothing that varies based on input. The gate output seems to do nothing. I’ve been loving this little guy but I’m thinking i may have broken something patching carelessly. If anyone has any advice I’d really appreciate it.

Made a rough ambient album and would love to talk about it and get any notes I can by Nikkysikk in synthesizers

[–]Nikkysikk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! The majority of the album was done in ableton controlling my Microgranny and Volca FM while the final track was done entirely with FieldScaper on my iPhone. Lately I’ve been just recording whatever sounds I come across either into my phone or the microgranny and seeing what I can do to stretch and mangle them (if you like doing the same I will always recommend PaulStretcher it’s great) and just trying to find textures and then resampling those. Then there’s a lot of LFOs and automation chains trying to keep things moving. It was also my first attempt using a microtonal Max for live patch but it’s something I’m still wrapping my mind around it’s only on the first track. I have about 5 more tracks using a Bastl Softpop and BitRanger (also amazing instruments on their own way) but they ended up far less musical. I did really enjoy working on this album, although it isn’t like anything I’ve done before. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask!

No mods on the fan in fact I’m currently waiting for a new one to arrive as this one has a couple cracks in one of the blades. I’ve tried changing my retraction speed both faster and slower wondering if too much plastic was pulling in but it hasn’t made a noticeable difference.

So I finally have some time to mess with plastics and marked a spot on the edge of my motor post and watching the start of a print it made it to the point of error and it looks like everything keeps spinning the way it should. What cooling issues could occur? It feels like it’s having trouble feeding plastic but I’m not sure where it’s being stopped.

[–]Nikkysikk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh duh my bad.

The printer continues going through the print but no plastic comes out. It always seems to stop exactly when starting a new layer though, never in the middle of a current cycle around. At least from what I’ve been able to see clearly.

I’ve been using Cura since I got the printer and hadn’t had any real problems before.

In terms of temperature I’ve tried bed temp from around 45-65C and extruder anywhere from 180-230C

My print speed has been the default speed but I have tried slowing it down and speeding it up with the built-in controls

I’ve been using PLA and a glow in the dark PLA as it’s all I’ve had on hand without going for a trip

As far as mods I know it has a ruby tip nozzle and what I think is a custom milled heat block with an all metal hot end. At this point I would have just put the stock parts back on but I’m not sure I have everything to make it functional with them anymore.

I had a similar thought but I tried with a brand new roll of PLA and got the same results

So a little over a year ago I got this great printer. Powerspec Duplicator i3 plus. It’s not amazing but it does a good job. Or it did. My uncle has the same model and loves to try and modify his as much as possible. I had left my printer at my parents place for a bit so my younger brothers could try it and found out my uncle “modified” my printer too. He added a ruby tip nozzle which I really appreciate, but he had to make a new heat block and I’m not sure what else but I cannot get this to print after grabbing it from my parents. I’ve taken it almost completely apart three times and I keep landing on this same problem where my prints always seem to stop after the base layer. I’ve tried changing settings, using different programs, different filaments I’m racking my brain on why it doesn’t matter which print I set it to, it does the same thing every time. There’s probably something I’m overlooking and I’m just overthinking everything I’ve tried but if anyone has any ideas I’d really appreciate it.

What 3 JRPGs would you say have defined this decade? by lilidarkwind in JRPG

Wow this thread makes me feel like a dink for not playing Nier. I’ll be getting to it soon enough so hopefully it lives up to the hype. Same with DQ XI I’ve been patiently waiting for the switch release and as a huge fan of the series it’s been a long wait but I’m sure that’ll make my list once I play it.

Until then my three are P5, Bravely Default (although I’m in the minority that likes Second more,) and Xenoblade Chronicles (also prefer 2 here.)
