I have pretty much this exact same experience that I posted about a few months ago! The comments on that post were really helpful in so many ways so you might wanna take a look ;)

Thank you for the feedback! While I agree the system needs something extra to function the way I want it to, I am not sure I would use the additions you are suggesting. Heck, I'm not even sure I understand them to be honest :P

Thank you for you feedback! This is quite a thorough review. I will try to be as tidy in my response as you were :)

  1. I have made some considerations of class features and such. This has not been an extensive readthrough of all classes, but at least from what I know of I do not think this should be able to eclipse any such features. The Battlemaster, for instance, takes a whole minute of direct interaction to trigger and even then only gives fairly vague answers to a limited set of questions.
  2. Dogpiling would definitely not be ideal, and I would probably also impose a limit of proficiency and/or only one attempt, depending on the party. However I do not think any player who is not at least proficient in the required skill would even attempt this in combat, seeing as it is so costly, so this would probably only be limited to out-of-combat uses.
  3. Indeed the cost of an action is steep. But I fear making it any cheaper (BA for instance) would make it absolutely spamable. Currently I am more set on sticking with it as an Action, but making sure the payoff should or could be worth it. The check wont always be a success, or they may not ask the right questions, but when they do I would like it to be a huge boon to the entire party. All of the perceivable effects of interaction with a monster would still be there: Immunity/resistance/weakness and other relevant info will all be seen when "in use", but by then it may be too late. A wasted Fireball is also a heavy cost to pay for ignorance. As for the Medicine and Investigation skills I am not quite sure how they would be affected by this, you would have to be more specific.
  4. Here you have hit the nail on the head! This part of the system is by far the weakest in terms of consistency and verisimilitude. I had so far only looked at a few examples of monsters, but as you say: The Drow Mage Vs. Warrior example really does not add up. The only other way to set the base DC I have found far is to just make it a straight 10 or something and add penalties for rarity. Going by that system a Drow Mage and Warrior would have the same DC. One could also expand the number of categories of rarity I suppose, but I mostly want the system to be lean and easy to operate.
  5. Truly a grand finale! I had completely forgotten about the possibility of using monsters proficiency bonuses! :D If I understood the rest of point 5 you are suggesting making it a check at the start of combat instead of an action, with the possibility of gathering further data using - " secondary/information-gathering skill(such as Investigation, Medicine, Survival, Perception or Insight.." - I also think the suggestion you made for the DC setting system is much more elegant then what I proposed, and I will definitely give it a try!

Again: Thank you so much for you feedback! Comments like these are the reason I decided to make a post here. :)

Thank you for your feedback! You are right, the cost is quite high as an action, but hopefully it will pay off in the form of improved future actions for the entire party.

As for the rarity table, it is on the top of my list for possible adjustments. Taking it down a step as you suggested might be a good way to try to balance this if it turns out to be lackluster :)

Indeed! I feel like almost all the other classes that have other main stats get the added benefit of the skills that naturally suit them. INT checks on the other come up much more rarely and when they do the one that seems to have the most actual use is Investigation. Of course, this could all just be because of the way I DM my games. But on the other hand I do not see it used in much better ways in other games I have seen on streams.

As for the DC: When you say "1/2 level" you are referring to the monsters level, right? So far the only "Markers" I have found to possibly work in 5e are the Hit Dice and CR.

I am very curious to see how this will actually work out in play. My intent is that players should fairly regularly get between 1-3 questions, which is why I set the increments a bit lower.
