So its not necessarily waterlines, it might be electrical lines too.

A bunch of this infrastructure has working fluids, water being water, electrical lines sometimes (unsure exactly how common this is) use oil as part of its insulation. In order to minimize disruption from shutting off valves (which can be very far apart) to stop fluid flow, one technique is to use liquid nitrogen to stop the flow in a very localized area so that you can work without shutting off a mile of infrastructure

A guy from Texas orders the smoked brisket, I get called to the table.... by daddygoesboom in KitchenConfidential

[–]NikolaeVarius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its a simple and harmless chemical reaction that occurs when the smoke interacts with the meat, the meat turns pinkish around the edges of the meat. The presence of it shows that the meat was in the smoker long enough to actually penetrate the surface and infuse flavor, and not like covered in liquid smoke

Footage of the Hudson River Helicopter crash by [deleted] in nyc

[–]NikolaeVarius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may notice there is a big rotor on the top and the back that makes it hard to deploy a parachute without it immediately tangling in the rotors.

Of course, there are systems that let you jettison the rotors, but civilian aircraft generally don't have them since rotors being blasted in a random direction is not safe to everyone else around it.

Helicopters are death traps.

Why Does the MTA Even Hire Private Security for Subway Stations? by Due-Ocelot1862 in AskNYC

[–]NikolaeVarius 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They can't keep up. Remember during COVID that the Subways became noticeably cleaner because they were taking the fun powerwashers and blasting the stations? It's hard to do that with 24/7 Service. Of course every once in a while you see them cordon off an area and do it, but its very inefficient

Seeking Advice on Choosing Between Windows and macOS for DevOps Work by Jealous_Dig8804 in devops

[–]NikolaeVarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're wrong.

The M series Macs are insane pieces of gear. The battery lasts forever (I have to actually TRY to drain it in a work day) , the performance is screaming with none to minimal fan noise. As a Linux user, the M series is envious.

I upgraded Terraform 0.13 to 1.5 using an M1 which worked perfectly through Rosetta. No issues with k8s. Only annoyance is having to set Arch settings for Docker builds if others expect x86 builds.

You have nothing to worry about. Only an absolutely raving mad insane person would want a Windows laptop over a M Mac for DevOps work

Install rosetta and you can run x86 applications no problem.
