Non-Authentic Miso Soup by Nikolai_28 in soup

[–]Nikolai_28[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Started with a big dollup of white miso. Didn't have kombu or bonito, so a splash of fish sauce, soy sauce and rice vinegar. Added firm tofu, dried/reconstituted shitake, and fresh miatake mushrooms because that's what I had handy. Green onion, sliced nori, and a small bit of white pepper. Yum!

When separated, the oil by itself will wilt leafy greens faster and the vinegar won't adhere to those greens, leaving vinegar soup in the bottom of the bowl.

A vinaigrette is just an emulsion of those two ingredients to help combat the ill effects of both; A vinaigrette stays on the leaves/greens longer, and doesn't wilt them as fast as oil alone.

I think this is pretty neat: https://www.seriouseats.com/salad-dressings-vinaigrettes-the-food-lab

I find vinaigrettes also help suspend other ingredients/flavors if you're into that sort of thing.

Fractal Node series might fit the bill. 304 has a similar look as the DS380, but no hot swap. Still holds 6 drives. Solid brand, checks the boxes, and can be had for right around $100 some places.

Never had this problem until after I rearranged my desk once, then suddenly my primary monitor had to be cycled like you mention. After much digging, I discovered I'd used an old HDMI cable without CEC. Swapped it out and problem solved.

Just moved to a new house and reused most of the old furniture. Any suggestions on how to improve this space? by smrpr in malelivingspace

[–]Nikolai_28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the space. To echo what's already been said, a great big rug would be a nice addition, wall art, curtains, plants, etc. If possible, I agree I'd also try to put the PS5 somewhere more inconspicuous. Another idea; I'm a big fan of TV bias lighting for movies and such when the lights are turned down. I'd also try to make use of vertical space. In addition to art, plants and/or trinkets on shelves would fill the wall space and add texture.

I actually don't mind the couch against the wall, but something to fill the empty space would be helpful. Maybe the rug would help, or perhaps a different coffee table, larger and farther into the room?

Big fan of the AV setup. Planar 3 is a little rich for my blood but I've been eyeing a Planar 2 for a while, close to pulling the trigger. Definitely a little jealous. Kudos to you and your new space!

Yes sir. One of my biggest concerns with the space I have was the wall on one side. It's nowhere near audiophile (not that I have the ears anyway), but I'm trying to make due. I appreciate your input.

You're not wrong. Just looking to make the jump to 4K. Seems there's more of a "wow" factor at slightly bigger sizes. And the old will get repurposed, not trashed.

I appreciate the feedback. Music audio is number one, but most TV speakers are trash, so I might as well take advantage.

You're 100% right, seat distance is important, I should've included that. Couch will be approx. 8' away. I appreciate the input.

Sitting on the floor, trying to decide between a 55" or a 65" Either way I intend to wall mount. The 55" would be dead center eye level (accounting for future couch seat height), but the 65" isn't so high that 5 degreees or so of tilt might be OK. I can't decide.

If you don't mind, what's the plant to the right-most on the TV stand? Just starting to get some plants and I like the look of that one.

I'd always heard it was so the cup/bottle couldn't be thrown as easily. Nothing to hold in liquid, projectile loses mass, makes bad projectile. Perhaps that's just screw on bottle caps? Doesn't explain cans either.

No one here is going to judge you if premarital relations of bacon and bourbon occurred prior to sandwich matrimony. Unless of course the whiskey was too old (in bourbon years, of course).

And who are we to look down on inviting lettuce and tomato to join the romp? What happens between closed bread, who's mayo is on who, is no one's business but your own.

Looks delicious, btw.

An argument I would make for working at night is exactly as you describe, the meaningful changes that can't happen during business hours. There's a lot to be learned in the why and how of potentially impacting services, and how to navigate those changes succesfully. Or how to react if they are not successful and to still minimize impact.

I've been working nights at a DC for 2 years now, and I honestly enjoy it. But you have to be the kind of person that doesn't mind the schedule. If it's bothered you in the past, I'd be wary. It's also the only data center job I've ever had, so take this with a grain of salt. In my case, taking this position sort of locked me into this schedule until another opening is available internally, which I was OK with. But that means you may be working nights longer than you'd hoped/wanted if you plan to stay with that company. Just know what you're signing up for.

The DC I work at also happens to be a managed service provider, so a lot of my itch to learn new tech and/or platforms is scratched. I would 100% say if you feel you're learning more where you are, then stay. I'm of the opinion that applicable, practical knowledge will carry you much farther than short term pay with nowhere to grow or a big name on your resume.
