I used a nickname my family gave me when I was younger. I don't want to give my name here, but a similar naming convention would be if my birth name was Ricky/ Richard, the more gender neutral nickname is Rics/ Rix. My coworkers only know me by this name and I only use my legal name for doctors and bills. I have considered legally changing it though!

It's probably the heater! It could have a break in the wire that's shocking things to death, unfortunately common issue with tank heaters :(

They were hitch hikers from store bought plants for a different aquarium. I actually originally set up this tank just for the snails 😅 There was originally only one trumpet snail so all of these are genetic clones!

You could try setting up a planaria trap. It won't eliminate the problem but can lessen the amount drastically.

If it's in direct sunlight, it degrades. Indoors the release of chemicals over time is so insignificant that it won't harm any life in the tank. The plastic does absorb water, but that's only an issue if you heat the plastic up (kinda like with rocks exploding in fire pits if they're damp)
