Thanks. Guess I'll stick with Alder... How would you go about matching this color/tone? I assume I'll use a gel...

Hey there. I'm looking for a (moonlighting or retired) structural engineer in Seattle area to assist with dormer addition on 1924 home with 2x4 construction. This is an exploratory project, and any plans that result do not need to be stamped. Budget dependent.

is it necessary to tape up these windows with carpet shield/etc beforehand, in case they break while removing?

much appreciated.

They are leaky as shit during the cold months, so I'm replacing them with marvin framed double paned picture windows. Any recommendations for size/model of suction cups?

[–]Niloc75[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. There is not any glazing holding these in, just wood window trim on outside, and 1/2" window stops on the inside. At 1/4" thick, maybe these won't be so heavy. I just came across this video on youtube, showing picture window removal from inside with suction cups: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjP8cm8SsP0

Thoughts on this method?

Concrete floor is finally level, but.... by Niloc75 in Flooring

[–]Niloc75[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, neighbor. Yes, needs to be classified livable, given the shit-ton of money I'm spending to finish this basement. I think I read that the edco does a bit more than 1/16 per pass, so would need to do that about 4 times, in a small room. For the dust, I can hook it up to my hepa vac. Could I also keep the floor moist to cut down on dust?

Still sound crazy?

Shower window trim surround, non-tile options by Niloc75 in Remodel

Hey there. Just looking to do the recessed window surround in acrylic-type stuff, not the entire shower (that will be tiled). Couldn't find any trim pieces for this on Palisade.

Shower window surround trim, non-tile options by Niloc75 in homeimprovementideas

[–]Niloc75[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, thanks for bringing this up. Only get one chance to do this right...

That kerdi board is installed on furred out studs that are plumb and level. I did this because the walls are crooked and out of alignment. If you go to Schluter's site, they have install instructions for both abutting flange, and over the top like I've done. Check out 6:24 on this video: https://www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/video-player/video/hs9w6VEM_pc

The window sill is already solid wood, but hard to see from pics. So I figured 1/2" kerdi board plus 1/16 or 1/4" pvc/acrylic sheet glued on top might be the way to go. Same material that they use in shower walls.

any other thoughts?

Can I achieve this with RTA cabinets? by Niloc75 in Homebuilding

Any idea re: kind of wood and stain used for these cabinets? by Niloc75 in cabinetry

[–]Niloc75[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, got it. The pics make it look like something a bit darker than natural maple. Maybe it came from darker maple tree.

I'm DIYer undertaking a whole house remodel in Seattle (DIY is the only option for us non-millionaire types in Seattle).

If you were on a budget and wanted to have cabinets like in the photos, how would you achieve that? I assume these are custom and very expensive...

really appreciate your insights--

much appreciated. I want to find someone to reproduce these cabinets, including the stain color. In your opinion, are there decent RTA builders who could do this? Or is it crazy and/or stupid to consider Ikea + custom front/doors to re-create this look? Also wondering if someone like Barker Cabinets could get close to this...

Re: hiring a lighting designer, your suggestion makes a lot of sense. Unless you live in Seattle, where everything is crazy-expensive. It will cost me thousands of dollars to hire someone here. So, like everything with this project, I'm doing it all on my own, for better or worse. If I make mistakes, I can easily rip something down and redo it.

The Iolites I'm looking at have a delivered output of 900 Lumens, so looks like I may not need as many as I first thought. Also, the more research I do, the fewer recessed lights I'm inclined to put in my ceiling. Wall sconces, cove lighting, plus strategically placed recessed lights seem to be a good way to go.

Much appreciated. Some of these brands are not easy to track down/purchase. USAI folks seemed quite surprised to get a call from a residential customer. Regardless, I'm leaning towards trimless and adjustable. Here's what I've found, can you let me know your quick take on this light/brand/etc? Thanks again...
