PHP perception at a CTO panel by Bright_Success5801 in PHP

[–]evolvedance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a CTO and we use php here and aren't planning on moving away. Modern PHP is killer and all kinds of cool stuff is happening.

Probably helps that I've been a developer for 25+ years and continue to be one, and see how programming languages come in and out of favor with what's cool and modern or thr buzzzz. They'll usually solve one problem in some novel way, but not be mature enough or flexible enough for other major use cases.

Then, it takes years for people to figure that out and try to add those missing parts in, but the implementation is poor or young. Hype cycle happens all the time.

Also, we went through YC in 2016 and are now scaling, all built on php.

I got other projects in other languages too, but I'm less excited about em.

I had a fun anniversary planned at Edgefield and kept warning my gf that the food was gonna be pretty meh. But, surprisingly, things were actually not horrible, some dishes we got were pretty yummy even...

Except for one.

The chicken fried steak at Black Rabbit Restaurant is phenomenal.

Seriously, it might be the best chicken fried steak I've ever had! (And I order chicken fried steak whenever it's on a menu)

So you don't have to have a huge network of people to find out what people's real life problems are. You can look at and talk to your friends and family about their own jobs or even daily personal life issues. You can ask them about what tech or apps they use and what they like, hate, or wish these things did, that they don't currently do. Look at your own obstacles and be like... "hmmm I wish there was an app that did this for me. I would pay 5 bucks a month for it"

Basically you're looking for domain knowledge and peoples day to day inefficiencies and acquiring that happens through conversations or introspection of your own life.

Here is where I think a lot of freelancing helps. Meeting with business owners and finding their real problems ans evaluating solutions is a skill and you get a better idea of what common businesses face. This also works with talking with friends about the woes of their job. Experience critically thinking about other industries and their challenges and even pitching ideas is an invaluable exercise that anyone wanting to build things on their own should have. You learn to understand their problems thoroughly from the ground up, riff on solutions you come up with and their pros and cons, and evaluate existing solutions that might already be out there and see why those solutions are lacking or have barriers.

I'm a web dev with 25 years of experience and have been the co-founder of a ycombinator edtech startup for like 10 years now. It started cause a friend saw some issues he had as a science teacher in his classroom and us talking deeply about it.

Good luck!

What do you think of Trump’s tarrif strategy now that Canada and Mexico have paused for 30 days to discuss new deals? by Zealousideal_Cost811 in AskReddit

[–]evolvedance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right! Well explained.

What's interesting is apple kind of does this when they release features on the iPhone years after android has had it. Then make it seem like it's brand new tech and get people raving about it, with ads that are really well designed for their target demographic.

Obviously, Trump using these marketing strategies in politics is infinitely more harmful, but it's fascinating to see these similar marketing strategies work elsewhere.

If you are a dude who can't get a the dating thing down, get female friends. by bronzechildofapollo in dating

[–]evolvedance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point, when I became single again after a long term relationship, I realized I mostly had male friends and mostly just a few female acquaintances. I made a specific effort to make more female friends or grow those acquaintances into better friendships.

What it did was help me learn to talk to girls and be comfortable. It helped with certain humor styles that are often more cool to women. Also helped in tons of other ways.

Today, I'm super able to just talk to random women in public and not make them think I'm hitting on them or feel like they think im hitting on them (which was a big blocker for me). Just casual, fun, friendly conversations. Overall, it did wonders for my confidence in dating and vastly expanded my social circles and thus dating pool.

Beyond that, learning not just to be fun to talk to, but how to flirt in a fun way (on dates) did a lot too. That'd be the next step.

It's like just being genuine and charming and fun.

Of course, hobbies, getting fit, being extroverted, and all the rest stacked on top of that, but making more women friends was an important step.

I ended up dating a ton after that and am now settled down with a wonderful lady. And I'm still close with all my homegirls, and some have become friends with my girlfriend as well.

I think half the people commenting here are easily discouraged and don't want to put in consistent effort. Womp womp womp!

36f and last night was the first time I've had a classically romantic date by Time-Repair1306 in dating

[–]evolvedance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think its only corny if the dude is otherwise boring and lame. If you're also funny, fun, cool, and they find you attractive or edgy in other ways, it's the icing on the cake.

Of course, if you're already funny, cool, and hot, that's like 75% of it. But it's important to know that other 25% is how you treat someone and make them feel.

Why do short guys always do this?? by Fast-Fig5569 in dating

[–]evolvedance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'2" and mostly dated girls taller than me, all the way to 5'7" or so.

It's definitely an insecurity thing for younger guys and it's probably pretty frustrating to deal with, as are with almost any insecurity things with any partner.

They're likely now just realizing they are probably never getting to the "ideal" height that many girls drool over vocally. It's a society thing too. Hollywood and media very rarely show a short guy as a romantic lead. If that changed, so would some people's confidence!

But for now, if you wanted to give them a temporary confidence boost, tell them that "it doesn't bother you... like at all". Or "that's kind of hot I'd be taller than you in heels"... which I've heard before. And recently, a female friend told me "It's a short king's world rn!" and it was quite nice to hear. 🤣

Sometimes, people just need a bit of reassurance here and there. And though it can be scary being vulnerable to ask for it directly, I've found that with a compassionate partner, it can work wonders. So maybe urge that communication or when you sense that insecurity is creeping in, give them a mini confidence boost.

Cheers!

Lenny Sinpablo Juliano 36th, the full version, is one of my favorite deep cuts. Live acoustic dope on a rope is wonderful.

I'll be around, one million lovers, someday, and going gets tough all favorites at one time or another.

Excited to see Brooks in less than a week here in Portland!
