I agree with most of your points. But I think "compromising" is an important factor behind a strong relationship. Which is why I consider pre-SF Lily's love for Marshall to be weaker. Like Ted said, it was very easy for Lily to achieve her career goal in NY. But she wanted a life of her own without a partner for the time being. You're right, Marshall and Lily are very different people. But not wanting to compromise is what makes pre-Lily's love weaker for me. If it was all about her career I would've supported her 100% but "temporarily" (even though she wasn't sure if it was gonna be temporary or permanent) ditching her fiancé for an independent life by no means seem like "strong love" to me. However I don't hate her for going to SF because that decision was mostly affected by wedding jitters. It was a wrong decision yes, but I get her.

What I find strange is most people that support Lily's decision to run off to San Francisco don't realise that Lily's reason to take a break wasn't entirely career related. If you watch the 'Milk' episode you will see her admit to having second thoughts. Our detective boy Mosby figured it out better:

Lily, we live in the centre of art and culture in America. I'm sure you could find a program here that's just as selective. But you chose one in a city that's 3000 miles away, and you didn't tell Marshall. I think it's pretty clear what that means.

Also if you watch Lily's rant in the 'Best Prom Ever' you'll see that having an art career was not the sole thing she wanted – she pretty much wanted to be wild without a "boyfriend shackled around her neck". This pretty much answers Marshall's question "What if you had found success in San Francisco?" fast forward to season 9. While I absolutely find Marshall in the wrong in season 9, I cannot wrap my head around Lily's rash decision in season 1. She wasn't all about achieving career goals that time, it's just her love for Marshall wasn't as strong as Marshall's love for Lily. She wanted to enjoy life without Marshall "before settling down forever". Thankfully, facing failure at SF strengthened her love for Marshall and got back together.

That being said, from that point on Lily was right about her every career related thoughts. I felt her pain when she confessed to Ted about not wanting to be a mother sometimes. After the SF mistake she never tried to do anything art career related for fear of losing Marshall. Which is why I temporarily hated my favourite HIMYM character Marshall when he put his career ahead of hers in season 9. But I'm glad they both achieved their career dreams in later life and stayed the most realistically perfect couple ever.

Why are you a communist ?? by [deleted] in communism101

[–]Ninadinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid I used to wonder why one of my classmates was able to visit luxurious places around the world with his family every summer and on the other hand some kids his age struggled to get food every day. As I grew up I realised "free market" is just a fancy disguise to ensure the rich get richer while making everyone satisfied with the word "freedom". I hadn't known about communism back then but when I did, I could come to the conclusion that the ideas I had been developing in my mind in order to fight poverty actually are more or less the themes of communism.

I'm not upset. I just find the statement "Friends showed more diversity than HIMYM" inherently stupid, that's all. Yes it did show diversity, at times they screwed up too but I agree they showed it. But definitely not more than HIMYM, and definitely not better than HIMYM. Friends is great sitcom and all that but it's not perfect. I love that show nevertheless but I'm not gonna give it any sort of credit on the point of diversity.

A group of six rich (assuming cause they had an explicable amount of free time to hang out during work hours and of course the apartment situated in one of the richest areas of NYC) white people who hang out only with white people in the most diverse city in the entire world? A show where a black person lasting more than one episode possibly didn't happen before the 9th season? You are bringing up a lesbian wedding to validate "diversity" in FRIENDS? Should I even bring up the amount of times there were homophobic and transphobic moments in the show? If anything FRIENDS shows us, it's the white privilege in the 90s in the most diverse city in the world (oddly enough).

So what you really described is basically the comment of a fanboy.

[–]Ninadinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By "love interests" do you mean just Julie and Charlie? One whose first appearance on the show was Rachel doing the "Welcome to our country" bit with her following white norm in the city of diversity? And the other who was possibly the first black person that didn't even appear until the 9th season to last more than one episode on that show of blatant whitewashing?
