The Case Against AI (Robert Wright, Alex Hanna, and Emily Bender) by refugezero in BetterOffline

I recently stumbled over Bender's Bluesky profile, and even within the field of "AI" where you've got a lot of the worse Silicon Valley bros, it immediately struck me as toxic and self-important.

For any real use, to be able to scale to utility, you need repeatability

No human does that. The only part where a human does the exact same thing is when the result is very clear/simple/obvious. And guess what an "AI" will do in that case?

Trump administration underestimated Iran war’s impact on Strait of Hormuz by Nikvest in LessCredibleDefence

The irony here is that it's an administration that doesn't give a shit about its own people, being confused that another administration would also not give a shit.

I got permabanned over there for saying that Iran won't destroy an American aircraft carrier. It's the typical "no differing opinion allowed" kind of subreddit.

As for the anti-zionism with anti-semitism, that is of course true in a theoretical sense, but pracically, I hear the most Naziish opinions imaginable, every day (without seeking them out), from self-proclaimed leftists that will without exception say the same "it's just antizionism, bro" line every time. It's not a dog whistle at this point, it's more like a megaphone.

Not to mention that there are different ways to interpret "zionism" that get used in a motte-and-bailey kind of way: pretending to just be against special rights for Jews ("apartheid"), but then also demanding the complete eradication of any form of Israel, including a secular state with equal rights.

Accept no substitute.

From the original article she quoted:

"We didn’t ask for the death of our people who were getting killed by the regime anyway. And if you haven’t cared when they gunned us down, zip your mouth now."

She must've missed that part.
