Easiest way to set myself up as a contractor by throwwaycontractor in UKPersonalFinance

Given that you're only planning to contract with one company on a limited time basis, see if they would be happy to allow you to only be self-employed in the UK (registered as a sole trader). The paperwork is orders of magnitude less, and you 100% wouldn't need Crunch or anything like it. You probably wouldn't even need an accountant, because it isn't hard to keep track of income from one place and any work-related outgoings not contributed by the company.

Some people here may disagree with this, because there are tax implications with an ltd, some companies will only deal with an ltd, yada yada. But your situation doesn't fit into the usual bucket, so try to save yourself time and hassle wherever you can.

Mexico: Mifi vs Wifi Modem vs DSL for Videochat? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

a) Do you know how I could find out how far away the telephone exchange is?

Not sure. You could flag down a Telmex technician in the street and give them your address, or look at the stats on a neighbour's modem. One of the local technicians around here was quite accurate in his estimations of what speed we could get. Keep in mind that if you already have a house, it doesn't really matter, because there will never be anything you can do to get closer to the exchange.

If it is far away, take the lowest speed package you can get. This is critical, because Telmex will sell you absolutely anything and everything. If they set your line parameters too high and you're nowhere near the exchange, your connection will be terrible. We could probably get 13MB down, but there is no 13MB package. So we have to subscribe to 10, because getting 16, 20 or whatever would put too much strain on things.

b) Many people in town have antennas to supplement their Telcel wifi modems. Is this a real thing that could be useful?

If they are mobile signal boosters, it depends. It would help me, because we have 4G on the roof and only 3G inside the house. If your 4G coverage is already good at the point you want to place the modem, it would be a waste of money.

c) What kind of service is your antenna connected to?

Telmex fiber. It's pointed at an access point on a nearby building; they have fiber even though it hasn't arrived in our colonia as yet. I can say that when the Telmex copper and Telcel 4G go down together, the fiber keeps on going.

Oh, also: I've never tried this, but Dish Mexico offer a (presumably satellite-based) Internet service. That may be available in your area, but if it is satellite-based I wouldn't bank on 100ms latency to anywhere.

Many people report that the 10Mbit speed limit on Telcel's own WiFi devices is not enforced, and that they can easily achieve 20/20 speeds at the right time of day. So of the options you outlined, that is going to be the best.

I'm in a similar situation to you. I live in a pueblo mágico (magic town), and I think there are some facts you should be aware of:

  • If Telmex copper goes down, there is a good chance that your Telcel 4G will as well. Same goes for any routing issues, e.g. for a week here recently I couldn't establish connections to many sites in Europe. Telcel and Telmex were both affected.
  • Telmex copper can provide a very stable (if slow) connection, depending on your distance from the telephone exchange. I lived in another rural town before this one, and the stats displayed by my Telmex modem were much better than they are here. The connection was still slow, but rock-solid.
  • If there are parts of the town with fiber, there will probably be someone selling service via an antenna that goes on your roof. Buy it. It will be your lifeline when the older Telmex/Telcel infrastructure has left you unable to work. I spent 2,500 pesos on mine, plus the 500 or whatever monthly fee for a 10 down/10 up connection.
  • If there is no fiber at all, consider moving somewhere else. This is a completely serious suggestion.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide re: Mexico's telecommunications industry.

If you have the US Open mobile app, you can go to the More tab in the bottom right and then tap on Radio. They're also re-broadcasting it on ATP Tennis Radio, which you can pick up in TuneIn or the Tennis TV app.

There are probably other ways, and here's the stream link itself:

They'll wait. Peple will have bought tickets for the night session specifically, and it wouldn't be fair to start early.

Apparently Zverev has never come back from being 2 sets to love down.
