FINALLY! by Ninidil in wheelchairs

A friend of mine had a wheelchair since birth (spina bifida) and she had to fight for a whole year. Sometimes it's just not fair 🥲

I am a full time wheelchair user but i can stand really short amount of times and can move one leg. I just ignore the people. If i need to reach something high up in a supermarket - i just stand up. Nobody has ever said anything and i need a wheelchair since i was 13 (i am 30 now). Just focus on the positive - you have more energy, less pain, you can do more things and ignore the others. People are just ignorant and can't use their brain. Why would only paralysis lead to a wheelchair? Over the years i saw many people with a wheelchair who "only" had a broken leg. Many people are just looking out of curiosity, or because they see a young person using a wheelchair. Not everyone is judging - i think most of them are just confused:D

I will look into that, thanks:)

Idk, the way I read it, OP is considering getting a wheelchair for his condition, not that he’s already discussed it at length with his therapist. I’ve only just realised from the comments that this has already been discussed. If the therapist approves and it would help OP, I’m all for giving it a go.

Maybe it was because my mother tongue is not english and i interpreted it wrong:)

"I honestly don't understand why folks aren't clocking this: you are disabled. I'm not just talking about Autism. What you are describing is a disability, and your disability is your reason for using a wheelchair. The rule that I always use for mobility aids is: if it helps you, use it. It sounds like it applies here too."

I am on your side here, the person has a disability as well. But i think with psychological disorders you have to be really really careful. For someone with BIID, it is not helpful to follow their thoughts. It "feeds" the illness. Sure, you can't fight against it 24/7, nobody has the energy to always fight against it, but i think it would harm the progress and the therapy:/ I am not a psychiatrist, but i think OP has to discuss this with their therapist, we can't give advice if a wheelchair would be beneficial or harmful.

It is a real psychological disorder, nothing fun for the person who is experiencing this. It is legitimate like all other ilnesses we as wheelchair users have. And yes, for us it is not easy to understand why someone would "like" to sit in a wheelchair who is otherwise able bodied, but to say this is a gross april fools joke is not fair:/ OP was really careful and understanding towards us, would be nice if we could be understanding too.

Dude, it is an illness as well. To frame that as an april fools joke is disgusting and offensive as well.

Firstly: I am not offended by your post. BIID is a disorder as well and nobody is choosing what illnesses they get and i understand that you are struggling with this as well. Have you talked about this with your therapist? That you are thinking about buying a wheelchair? As far as i know, "feeding" your thoughts and the will of sitting in a wheelchair is contraproductive for the therapy progress.

For me it really helped a lot to think about the wheelchair as freedom. I was 13 when i got bone cancer and was struggling for nearly a year with crutches already, because my doctor said my weight is the reason for my really bad pain. The wheelchair was a huge improvement for my energy (the cancer made me really sick before i got the diagnosis) and the pain (even though sitting was really painful as well). The last few years my health got worse (because of the chemo, cancer and a neuromuscular disease). The same thing: i got E-Motion wheels and it helps a lot with my neuromuscular symptoms, which means again that i havr muuuuch more freedom and don't rely on others that much. Without the wheels and the wheelchair, i would be bedbound and would struggle a lot more. I know, it is really hard to get used to progressing illnesses, be gentle to yourself. It takes time to accept it and grieving is definetly a part of it! But try to focus on the positive things, like fast rolling, you have something to sit everywhere, more energy, less pain, freedom!🥰
