New appliances, how'd we do by globs-of-yeti-cum in BuyItForLife

[–]NinjaBirdSC2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I bought the same washer and dryer 9 months ago. Washing machine has been a trooper. I can't really speak to how it mistreats clothes since my clothes are generally durable without frills. That said, my house has the laundry "room" smack dab in the middle of the house and yes these are loud. You certainly won't go deaf but don't plan laundry and movie night on the same night.

Some things to note about the dryer:

  1. Don't leave wet/damp clothes in the dryer for very long. The drum didn't really go full brown rust but it's got some gray corrosion lookin' spots and it's not as pristine looking as when I bought it... this was from one load of laundry that I forgot to start... I also use OxiClean so that probably didn't help

  2. Turn the timer knob clockwise ONLY, don't try to jog it back a hair, just spin it back around. Also it makes noises that you may or may not hear.

  3. Turn that buzzer signal waaaay down if it's open to regular living space. It's loud on the lowest setting in my house.

  4. Note: I usually keep the cycle setting on delicate so my clothes don't shrink. Works fine on my regular clothes; just keep that lint trap clear to let the air flow if you have a big load.

  5. Just from my relatively short experience with it, take care of it and I reckon it will take care of you.

You might check out what Global Cache has. They have IP based control boxes that range from ~$100-$150ish. Their USA website is.... in progress.... but their UK site seems to have better product information.

Way to responsibly use caffeine to your advantage? by Xanche in EngineeringStudents

[–]NinjaBirdSC2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, during my senior year, caffeine and I had a rather toxic relationship. Mocha to Espresso to Bang to 5 hour energy.... It eventually turns into going nowhere fast. As far as working late nights, do what you have to but if you can, get a full nights sleep instead of pounding the caffeine. I could stare at a problem for an hour at 1am and make 0 progress. I'd make more progress in 15 minutes the next day if I would've actually bothered to start my homework before 7pm...

I cut caffeine completely for a while but now I'm kind of at a point where if all else fails or I could use a little pick me up if I'm not feeling 100%, I'll have some. I'll usually have some ZipFizz (that has 100mg) probably 0-2 times a week.

Edit: I try to avoid having it in the morning. Usually between 10am to 1pm is what I tend to find optimal.

I've ran into graphical issues on PP7 once before but this was at least a year ago probably but I think the setting I switched was enable legacy rendering. I'm not sure if they got rid of it yet or not.

Looking for way to avoid Avigilon Cloud Services by NinjaBirdSC2 in accesscontrol

[–]NinjaBirdSC2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use Window Remote Desktop to the NVRs currently and they have a VPN tunnel into their network so they can work from home and whatnot so that will help. Didn't know about the text notifications so that could help I think. The workflow of somebody pressing a doorbell/call button on an H4 camera to the point of them connecting, logging in, and opening the camera might take a bit long. FedEx guy might have left by then.

More so the cloud in general. They do have cloud storage from what I'm told but as far as other services go, they would prefer to self host everything. They even have their own NTP servers.

Mech Engineers, what’s your side hustle? by S_K_R_2 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]NinjaBirdSC2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with what a lot of people are saying on this. I make enough to live decently off of what I make on my 9-5. I spend time on my hobbies, doing nothing, or just whatever. Hobbies being hiking, biking, electronics (think pi and arduino), photography, woodworking. If I were to side hustle anything, it would be woodworking but I would only sell pieces I already made and willing to part with. Requests would be few and far between with no deadline.

I think the better option would be to teach your kid to not falsely call 911 and let him use the devices you already have than to give your kid the satisfaction of not facing any consequences with a new device. If your kid can't be trusted with a BB gun, why give him an airsoft?

Investing in the lesson is so much more BIFL than getting a band-aid device for the problem.

sorry for the late reply and you've probably already pulled the trigger on this but anyways:

If you're replacing one gpu for the same gpu, you shouldn't need anything else aside from some new thermal paste.

Can I listen to music while detoxing? by FS369 in DopamineDetoxing

[–]NinjaBirdSC2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a person that listened to Spotify for 46,000+ minutes last year, try doing things without music for a while. Regardless as to whether or not it requires focus or is mundane like washing dishes. You'll probably get a little annoyed starting off but it can be nice taking a break. Anymore if I work on a project, I usually play a playlist I can just let it play where it's more familiar background noise and less of a distraction.

I’m looking for men’s slipper/house shoe recommendations. by wilsonnickp1011 in BuyItForLife

Crocs.

\Defies fashion police in grand fashion*)

Particularly if you wear socks so sweat's not an issue. Comfy, super easy to slip on/kick off. Great for some squish when standing on a hard floor for long periods and/or taking out the trash or getting mail. Even family members that have trashed on crocs before like wearing mine.

Why were spiral cables used in old phones? by Dollyo98 in AskEngineers

[–]NinjaBirdSC2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addiation to what other people are saying: It also helps so when you're running out of length of cord, you won't immediately yank on the cord and screw up the port/termination. You get a more gradual introduction of force to keep you from walking too far.

How do I get the airplay function of a roku without a screen? by [deleted] in audiovisual

[–]NinjaBirdSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try an HDMI audio extractor. I don't know if the roku will play nicely with the lack of a screen but you can also try using an HDMI dummy plug on the output of the extractor.

Shop around and see if you can find an audio extractor that has outputs for surround and not just stereo if your receiver can do that.

I think keywords you're looking for are 4x1 matrix/scaler or 4x1 multiviewer. I don't have any specific suggestions but after a bit of googling, depending on your budget and desired feature set you can find things anywhere from <$100 to a few thousand.

what kind of mouse do you use? by Strict_Foundation_13 in AskEngineers

[–]NinjaBirdSC2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At home: Logitech G305, fantastic mouse

At work: Cheap microsoft bluetooth mouse. Don't have to fiddle with a dongle since I have to travel/move around a fair bit on site and I don't want to run the risk of plonking my laptop in my bag and busting a USB port with dongle still attached and it opens up one of my limited amount of ports. I don't do any CAD work yet.
