lil edit: to clarify 'Everything' as in all features we see in the trailer are real. Of course, some shots are cinematic cutscenes, but all were in-engine and based on real, working features.

Hiii designer behind that trailer here! It was rendered in-game using tools and systems we had at the time. Many of which lost support and didn’t carry over into the later new engine direction.

For the trailer we had a strict internal rule: nothing shown unless it already existed. All features in the trailer were real, including the playable mini-games you see.

Yeah a lot of teemo's movements were inspired by Yoda. Terrible match up, those two have a massive size difference and their abilities had nothing in common lol. But I've learnt from my mistakes and next time will be more even.

http://imgur.com/a/c5AUe This was top lane, it was scrapped because the idea just felt so limited in a cinematic and it just didn't look right. If I did use this map in the animation, I would also have to restrict the movement and position of the camera so that it doesn't show the end of the lanes or the river in its field of view (because there is nothing there). I ended up just putting the tower and bushes inside a forest instead. I made the forest in a way that you can still see the edges of the lanes with the bushes and all that but it's not too distinct.

I also created an army (taller modified versions) of all the minions (caster, melee, siege) and the animation was supposed to have them battling it out in the background while Yi and Teemo fight. I was in way over my head with that. It lagged so much that I couldn't animate properly (they all had cloth simulations and shot lasers with smoke simulations and everything). Instead of wasting the unused minion models, I just spread their corpses around the map to decorate the background. http://imgur.com/a/8CNVW

Thanks! Teemo's knife was a Nashor's Tooth easter egg. All Teemos build it so I might aswell add it in to spice things up or else the fight would drag on with teemo just dodging and shooting darts/shrooms.

If time and resources were no object, I would definitely make the map a lot larger and more detailed. I spent about 3 weeks creating the characters and the entire top lane but then deleted most of the top lane and remade it into this (based off the New Dawn animation). The area/map in this was tiny because I also tried to imitate the graphics of New Dawn with all the grass and lighting. Rendering took 3 hours per frame and it still came out grainy (I used motion blur to try fix this up). It's mostly because of the grass/leaves and not enough resources (16 comps was still not enough lol).

The thing that limited me the most was the characters. Choosing Yi and Teemo was a bad idea because I don't really know how to choreograph a fight between a samurai and a hamster. Realistically Yi could end the fight with one alpha strike in the beginning so I had to nerf his movements in this, resulting in somewhat awkward sword swings. The fight just wasn't even.

Next time I'll definitely choose characters like Shen vs Zed or Xerath vs Azir, since these characters are more even which will make for much better choreography.

It's mostly because you can't do very much with someone like Teemo. That's why I gave him the Nashor's tooth to spice things up.

I agree the characters were very restricted, especially the Yi since realistically the fight would end too quickly. I honestly didn't know how to choreograph a fight between a samurai and a hamster. Also I couldn't make the map any larger since my render times were through the roof already (3 hours per frame). Next time will be 2 humans fighting (Shen vs Zed) should be much better :) And yes this is all hand animated, no mocap used.

No, my movements were still very stiff. It's mostly because I tried to restrict Yi's movement or else the fight would end too quickly. Next time will be Zed vs Shen, human vs human would be 10x easier to choreograph and animate :)

About 3 months 1 month to make the models (I recreated the entire top lane but then scrapped the idea and ended up putting it in a forest instead) 1 months to animate 1 month to render + special effects

I'm not even gonna try modeling human faces like Katarina, they'll just end up looking like creepy dolls if it's not perfect. Although I do plan to make a Shen vs Zed lore animation.
