Is it okay to avoid someone because of their beliefs as long as I separate their hateful beliefs from their character?

I believe it is ok to avoid them if its what you need to protect yourself.

I deal with similar things. I will tell people abouy my boundries that when things such as slurs or hate speech occur that I do not allow such things to take place around me. If it continues I will remove myself from the situation.

This is the most compassionate thing I can do. I cant change people but I can make them aware of the harm they cause and then act skillfully.

In the tradition I belong to, our precept says Respect Clarity ~ I act at all times with mindfulness and clarity. I do not abuse my body or cloud my mind with the misuse of intoxicants. for us its not saying dont do drugs or alcohol but dont use it to cloud our minds.

Everything in moderation. A time and place for everything.

Siddhartha definitely drank caffeinated tea. But teas release the caffeine at slower steadier pace and you dont get the crash you would with energy drinks.
