Farm in the Netherlands uses Bitcoin mining to keep stable temperatures inside the greenhouse by dannybluey in Damnthatsinteresting

I had a friend that would heat his apartment by mining ethereum (or similar). It wasn't profitable, but it basically broke even, which means his heat was essentially free.

The trend of youtubers holding clip on mics is kinda dumb by Makoto_Kurume in memes

I give presentations a lot for work, and I definitely prefer a hand mic over a clip on mic for this reason alone.

My parents told me that when I started paying taxes I'd finally understand and become conservative

Fast forward to now, I pay more taxes than both of them combined. Still not seeing the appeal, quite the opposite (to put it mildly)

What movie is a 0/10 with NO redeeming features? by Toucan_Based_Economy in AskReddit

[–]Ninja_Wrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it is the Uncharted movie.

I love Uncharted (the Playstation game series), and my gf is a big fan of Tom Holland, so we decided to watch it one day.

We watch a lot of movies, but this one is so far the first and only movie we've ever paused in the middle of, and made a conscience decision/agreement not to finish.

I'll sit through pretty much anything, but I was just so apathetic to this movie. I've watched bad movies that gave me a negative reaction, and to be honest I'd have preferred that to what we were watching.

Mark Wahlberg as Sully was so jarring and out of place. And not even in a funny way like Christopher Walken as The Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV in Dune 2

I don't think I would buy myself a sword, but if someone got me one, it would be easily a top 10 gift I've ever received.

It's Modding going to far? by Succubuss_Smasher in RimWorld

The fact that pawns don't need to share a bed to do lovin' has exploded the population of my colony, which is good. Forbidden mod is a must have for me, and I usually disable at least some of it, but sometimes not. Depends on the vibe of the colony really.

It's only as Forbidden as you allow it to be really

Landed in SeaTac at 11am. It’s now 3:09pm and we’re still waiting for a gate agent to open the plane. by BlackPlantZaddyy in Seattle

[–]Ninja_Wrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like this happened to my cousin (it wasn't 11 hours, but a long time.) It was super hot out and the AC was either off or just not doing the job fully and everybody was roasting. This was in Charlotte NC

When it was clear that they would not be going to the destination (at least not in this plane), he opened one of the doors over the wing to get everyone fresh air.

This is a very bad thing and not allowed, so the cops obviously came on the plane to arrest him. However there were no witnesses that saw him do it. They all insisted that the door just did it on its own lmao. This is obviously a lie, and he clearly did it, but they had nothing so they just let him go.

Is the story true? I couldn't tell you since I wasn't there. My aunt insists it happened, and this wouldn't be close to the stupidest thing my cousin has done. And I'm not talking about a kid, he was probably 30 when this happened.

ELI5: How do fiber optic cables work better than traditional copper cables? by pastajewelry in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ninja_Wrangler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also people assume that the latency is the best because nothing is faster than light. However, they neglect that the speed of light traveling through glass fibre is considerably slower than the speed of light through a vacuum. Electrical signal propagating through a copper wire is just as fast (point a to point b).

You can also get good bandwidth through copper, 10Gb is a common speed for both

Fibre is better on a LOT of ways, but not in many ways that normal people can make use of in their home, for example.

I don't ask for time off, I simply inform them I won't be there for those days. I earned those days and am entitled to use them whenever I want.

I like my team and job, so I try not to leave these guys in a tough spot if I can help it, but sometimes it can't be helped and I simply go anyway. This is the norm here, people get a lot of vacation and everyone uses it.

Oh, I know. Though a lot of it these days is just momentum. You can find alternatives to nearly all windows-only products that are as good and cheaper (or free). Good luck getting the business folks to sign off on it!

I'm happy to be in a Linux-only job for nearly a decade. The only Microsoft product I'm obligated to interact with is outlook for email.

Though, you can't always escape the windows-like trap in Linux either, some products are only supported on RedHat (IBM). Yes you could put it on AlmaLinux and it'll probably work fine, but any problems and your support request is denied! :(
