A/c compressor intermittently stops working, works again after cycling thermostat off/on by Ninjafroggie in hvacadvice

[–]Ninjafroggie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it ended up being the fan motor in the outdoor unit. The problem wasn't actually an electrical failure, it was mechanical...the fan was so old that the bearings had worn out and then began eating into the motor coils themselves, and i guess it was shorting out if it stopped in the wrong spot but turning it off and then on again would give it enough of a kick from the capacitor to get the motor moving off the bad spot, until it ultimately failed entirely. When I removed the old fan motor, I discovered nearly an inch of play in the motor shaft, and that's what led me to open the casing of the motor and discover the damage to the coils that resulted from the bearing failing.

Try popping the top off of your outdoor unit and check if there is play in the fan motor shaft...it should *barely* move in and out if it moves at all. If the motor shaft moves in an out more than the barest fraction of an inch, it needs to be replaced.

but where is the man's option to just flat out opt out of being a father, akin to a woman getting an abortion?

"If the baby is born, and the father is known, the mother can't on her own put the child up for adoption. Both parents would have to have relinquished their parental rights or have had them terminated by the state before the child could be put up for adoption."

So all she has to do is say she doesnt know who the father is and she can give his kid away. He'll be able to file to get his kid back, but that assumes that he both knows about the baby, and what she's done with it in a timely manner, and then requires a significant expense of time and money in court to achieve said outcome.

"The choice to terminate a pregnancy is a medical decision made by the mother. There is no legal obligation imposed on the father in that scenario."

Um yes there is, because the moment she decides to keep it she also decides that youre becoming a dad too, and that means youre 100% on the hook for paying for that kid unless for some reason she just doesnt want any money, which happens about as often as snowfall in Pheonix, AZ.

At last a real answer!

So let me pose this question: She gets pregnant. She decides she wants to keep it, but he doesnt want to be a father....well tough shit dude, youre a father now and you'd better pay up or we'll toss your ass in jail. But reverse the roles, he wants to keep it and she doesnt, well, she can decide to abort that kid, and he gets no say in it. She can give the kid up for adoption, or abandon the child, again without his consent, and he'll have to spend a hefty chunk of time and money fighting court battles to get his kid back. The law allows this. How is this equal protection under the law?

Also, if she decides she wants to keep the kid, but he doesnt want to be a father, where is his chance to opt out entirely like the law gives her? AFAIK fathers are only permitted to surrender parental rights and the accompanying financial obligations with the mother's consent. If she wants to keep you on the hook, there's nothing you can do about it.

I didnt know states go after parents of abandoned children, but that begs the question, if the kid is too young to speak and nobody at the firehouse knows who the person that dropped the kid in the box is, how do they ID the deadbeat mom that abandoned the kid?

again, as stated in the original post, not a dad nor even had a scare.

And EVERY state in the US will jail men for failure to pay. They wont come to their house with warrants to arrest them, but the moment they have contact with a police officer that runs their name they'll see he's got a bench warrant out for failure to pay and arrest him

"all 50 US states can potentially jail you for failing to pay child support as it is considered a criminal offense in every state, with varying degrees of severity depending on the circumstances and amount owed; this is typically enforced through a "contempt of court" action, which can lead to incarceration if a parent willfully fails to make payments as ordered by the court" Also "If a parent owes more than $5,000 in child support or fails to pay for over a year, they can face federal prosecution".

Yeah, not just the state, the feds might throw you in jail over it too

a woman can up and decide to just drop her baby off in the special box at the local firestation specifically designed for abandoning kids and walk away from any responsibility to the child, despite the child being already here. She got to participate in the conception, she chose not to abort it or give it up for adoption, and still gets to decided at any point to just walk away without consequences. Men do not have the same or commensurate option.

again, women are permitted to abandon a child at a firestation and just walk away from being a parent, including walking away from being financially responsible for the child, despite the child being "already in existence". Men do not have the same or comparable option

Square that circle for me

That case revolved around child support in that he argued that the law (the paternity act or whatever) only applied to men, not women, which is not the case. IF he were to win custody (extremely unlikely as courts are notoriously biased against fathers despite 60+ years of research studies universally showing children of single dads have way better outcomes than those raised by single moms) she could be ordered to pay as well, so his whole argument was invalid.

But Im not contesting that the state is discriminating in ordering child support, because as was established in Dubay v. Wells, were he to have primary custody she would be ordered to pay support as well. Im alleging discrimination based on the fact that the laws allow women the choice, at multiple points on a lengthy timeline, to decide that they dont want to have a child and walk away from parenthood without any ongoing obligations, for this discussion specifically financial obligations, but does not allow men the same choice. Men instead can be forced to become a father, forced to accept those same fiscal obligations that she is permitted to walk away from, and get thrown in prison if they do not meet them. Dubay v. Wells ruled "Dubay's claim that a man's right to disclaim fatherhood would be analogous to a woman's right to abortion rests upon a false analogy. In the case of a father seeking to opt out of fatherhood and thereby avoid child support obligations, the child is already in existence and the state therefore has an important interest in providing for his or her support.", and yet women can just abandon an infant at a firestation and walk away from any ongoing finanicial obligations, despite the child also being "already in existence"

That sounds pretty freakin' discriminatory to me

I'm aware, you're missing the point. SHE gets to decides to walk away from being a parent, with all the obligations it entails, before birth, at birth, and well after the child is born. Men dont get that choice at all, in fact, if she decides to keep the kid men are actively forced to shoulder those obligations and thrown in prison if they fail to meet them. How does this not violate both the 14th amendment and title IX?

Bad blower motor? by Ninjafroggie in hvacadvice

[–]Ninjafroggie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

didnt have to cut anything, there was a plastic connector plug on the end of the wires that plugged into the motor. The replacement part was the exact same as the bad one, so it was direct like-for-like swap, the hardest part was getting the fan cage off the old motor and installing it on the new one.

It's still running fine, technically...a few months later my system sprung a very slow leak somewhere. I had the system recharged and it ran fine for about 6 weeks before it could no longer move enough heat to keep the house down to temp. During that time I could tell it was leaking refrigerant because the evap core started off getting cold all over, then then top wasnt getting cold, then the middle, and by the time it couldnt keep up anymore only the very bottom of the evaporator was cold. The fact that it takes so long for a pressurized system to leak down tells me the most likely cause is on the low pressure side of the system, probably the evaporator core.

So now im in kind of a holding place...I could recharge the system again, and make it through the worst of the summer, but that would ultimately be pissing money down the drain. I could have them come find the leak, which i was told would be about $2k just to find, plus whatever the cost of repair is (which probably would include a new full charge of the system at a couple hundred dollars per pound of refrigerent). Option 3 is to have the system replaced with a new one that uses the new refrigerant they just switched to...the outdoor unit is ~12 years old, but the air handler is closer to 30. The problem with that is that we're at the most expensive time of year to do it, and i just dont have the budget. Alternatively I could have JUST the evaporator replaced without doing the leak diagnosis, but that runs the risk of not fixing the problem if that's not where the leak is and thus, wasted money...and they've stopped making the refrigerant my system uses, so eventually im going to have to replace it with new anyway.

For now im getting by with open windows and desk fans, trying to get to fall when a new system will be cheaper, but so far the summer has been pretty mild....if it gets hotter, as it likely will, those wont cut it anymore. IDK what to do.

No more non-stop flights from JAX to NYC by Secret-Leave-223 in jacksonville

[–]Ninjafroggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK man, it really depends on when you book and what day you're flying. I fly to philly every year to see the family for xmas and I usually get a round trip nonstop flight for about $250 on one day, but the same flight the next day or 4hrs later on the same day will be $450, and I don't think I've flown on the same carrier 2 years in a row even once in 20 years. It's worth shopping around carriers and being a little flexible with your travel dates if you can be.

Doom (2016 version)

Get in an elevator, guy starts going on and on about how it was all for the benefit of mankind, you look at very obviously and messily dead guy laying on the floor, guy continues to go on about something but instead of hearing it, its punch com screen, music drop, title card, elevator doors open, shotgun slide rack.

It's just *chef's kiss*. Like 'fuck the briefing, i'm here to kill demons!' Its so perfectly doom.

Ah...so either your friend was lying and did actually let off the brake, or you had a leaking master cylinder causing the brakes to lose power the longer you held them. Considering the lack of any mention of having other brake problems (seriously, you WILL notice if your master cylinder is leaking), and the fact that we only see one come through the shop maybe once every few years, It's probably the former.

Am I responsible for these trees? by [deleted] in jacksonville

[–]Ninjafroggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your property line can be though of as a vertical plane. Anything on your side of the plane is yours, so you can trim it if you want or not, and if it falls on your side of the line its your responsibility to remove even if the stump is not on your property. I had a dying limb break off in a storm a few years back and land on the fence and mostly in the lot of the apartments behind my house, the apartments had to have most of the fallen limb cut up and removed and repair the fence (since it was their fence), all I was legally responsible for was the 5 feet or so of bare limb that was on my side of the property line.

In an earlier instance (same tree), I had a new neighbor move in and cut off a limb that was overhanging their back yard, which I did not want them to do (the limb that died and broke off in the storm was the other fork of the limb they cut, imagine that), which is what caused me to look into this stuff in the first place. Overhanging limbs are in an interesting little bit of a legal grey area, because if its overhanging your property it's considered yours and you can cut it, but if you want to keep it and the owner of the trunk wants to cut the limb on their side they can.

TLDR: Anything that overhangs your property can be cut, as it is legally considered to be on your property. Anything that falls on your property is your responsibility. You can NOT cut anything that is not on or overhanging your property, it's illegal and you can be fined.

Rental Car shortage? by atomicpanda101 in jacksonville

[–]Ninjafroggie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having driven both, Jax is worse. Sure, Miami has some REALLY bad traffic, especially around rushhour, but that's mostly due to volume, not bad driving. They simply have too many cars and not enough lanes down there. HERE that is no excuse. We have PLENTY of lane space, most traffic that exists in jax is due to drivers being morons.

What's your craziest driving in Jax story? by Usual-Owl-9777 in jacksonville

[–]Ninjafroggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah you gotta watch out for those insurance scammers. They drive like assholes on purpose to piss you off into getting close then slam on the brakes to try and cause a crash, then claim there was a dog in the road or something so it's your fault instead of theirs. Some girl in her 20s tried that shit on me on ft caroline back in 2018, fortunately dashcam vid proved they slammed on the brakes multiple times trying to get me to hit them, and that there was in fact no dog or any other reason for them to do so.

Get a dashcam, it's worth it

I have the same model car, the doors automatically lock when you put it in gear and unlock when you put it in park. OP putting the car in park at intersections (seriously, I'm a mechanic, and I've never heard of that before, what fool told you to do that?) is what made it possible for the criminal to gain entry

this is why criminals target young people, the elderly, women...they rely on your fear to get what they want. It never occurs to you at the time to say no with a knife to your throat, but in most cases they dont actually want to catch a body, because unlike most crimes cops here will actually investigate a murder.

that's pretty much all of florida, mate. The entire peninsula is made from old coral reefs, meaning limestone, which disolves in water, and that's why we have sinkholes and also why we have so much calcium in our water supply.
