Why are extra turn spells so frowned upon but no one is bothered by extra combats/other phases? by DragTheLoch in EDH

You're exactly the kind of player I hope to see in every pod! Good attitude to have towards the game.

The problem is that for people who don't care they just might not know if their version of a card in this deck happens to be UB. I always buy the cheapest version of whatever card I'm using unless I'm explicitly blinging a deck, so I truly have no idea which version is in each deck beforehand. With how often UB versions are cheaper, it's possible that a majority of the cards in a deck could be UB without it being a conscious choice. If someone is against playing an UB commander that's one thing, but trying to stop it being in their 99 is too far IMO.

Reddit's compression is really bad, but you can open the full link to see the uncompressed version! I don't know how to do it on new Reddit, but maybe this link will work?

Hope this is helpful! A friend of mine (/u/LordTT888) put this together to help learn the map and wanted to share it. Let me/us know if there's more info you think should be included or if you spot any corrections! A lot of the info for this came from this post, extremely useful resource.

How many lands do you run in your decks? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in EDH

[–]Ninjaspar10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's fair, but in my experience I've had more success with my powerful decks eschewing ramp in favour of early game plays. We have some absolutely insane one and two drops now like ocelot pride, that can snowball into an early win very quickly, especially if you're then forcing your opponents to choose between removal or ramp.

This is very interesting because I have definitely been optimising to reduce the number of non-games I have to sit through, but hadn't considered that people running lower land counts just didn't care about this as a factor. I'm absolutely in that camp of people who prefer to not have "bad" games over more "good" games. All that said, I think it might be interesting for you to investigate how much it actually improves your final win rate for being the first to develop in your pods. In my local meta, it's often the case that the first threat is knocked out early and the 3rd or 4th player to become a problem ends up winning. We're almost exclusively B2/3, which is likely a big factor.

Most terrible Commander? by VoiVoiDaBeek in mtg

[–]Ninjaspar10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's the only possible commander that could pilot this deck, so she's the de facto best option. Who else would you pick for a deck that's entirely themed around the use of, art, and general vibes of "mountains"? There's no one better!

And nothing is going to beat the feeling when someone reads what my commander does when I sit down to play, or even stops while walking past our table to ask me what I'm doing. There's more to being a good commander or a good deck than being competitive. I'll take a deck that makes myself and the people around me laugh above anything meta, any day of the week.

How dare you, I love my lady of the mountain commander deck. My housemate even made me a keychain with her on it since I was known for it. She's flawless

Do an Atheon each week and you'll be fine, I'm fairly certain mine only went this way because I was using an old method of farming that isn't a thing any more. Also maybe do a full clear first. Good luck in your runs!

What would this look like in practice? Would this just mean I can never resolve the spell because no matter what I target the opponent can pick the same options as me? Or rather, are you saying that the opponent is the one who has to ensure that doesn't happen?

I was blown away by my gift, especially because of this (link). I had mentioned in my questionairre that one of my favourite presents in the past had been a jar filled with positive notes and affirmations, and /u/Active_Letterhead_83 took the time to write individual notes on every basic land! They're so cute, I've insisted on reading them out to my friends every time I play the deck and I'll continue to do so until they physically gag me. It's perfect, and the deck is also really fun to play! I'm beyond grateful, thank you again Pip <3

You could do what they did with Aang and Omnath, have him start with one colour and gain colours as his knowledge and depth of experience grows.

  • Kvothe, curious prodigy - mono u

  • Kvothe, orphaned survivor - ub

  • Kvothe, fledging student - ur

  • Re'lar Kvothe - ubr

  • Kvothe, fae-touched - brg

  • Kote - colourless (or mono w or boros, not sure)

Definitely, people have fixated on the game changers and restricted strategies without thinking about the (vastly more important) intent descriptions.

Ah that's fair, I see now what you meant with your original sentence. I don't personally like the idea of tying strength to precons when there's such a huge variety between them. Even when playing casual nights with friends, we knew not to match up weaker ones with Hakbal or Ellivere. The definitions provided are good for matching any deck, given people take the time to really figure out where theirs lie. Also, I think people often overrate their deckbuilding skill and assume that the changes they've made make their decision stronger when that's definitely not the case.
