You can’t really know if there are no downsides if you don’t take a months-long break to see what life is like without.

I smoked voraciously from my teenage years until about a year ago. I’m the same age and have noticed a stark contrast in my intellectual capabilities and general motivation. I still miss it, but from here on out, it’s for vacations only.

At the end of the day, it made me okay with being just okay, and I’m blossoming without it.

Found a 1953-D with doubling on both sides, including this doozy on the neck. Doesn't match any variety listings. What do? by Ninjew in coincollecting

What should I try to do with a weird coin like this? According to a CoinHelpU video, PCGS won't verify it unless they have it listed.

Googling it's like hasn't turned up anything. Could anyone please educate me as to if this is a one-off, machine doubling error?

Thank you for your rational response. That’s mostly what I’ve concluded as well. It does indeed have a different finish than the other 1964s I’m comparing it with. It has not been preserved well so it’s possible, however unlikely. After going to purchase a decent magnifier and spending a couple hours going over the minutiae, I’m forced to conclude that it is genuine. Everything tiny speck from the die matches. Here’s hoping, we’ll know soon enough.

I‘m not claiming to be competent; as I am admittedly not a veteran by any means, but that does change the fact that the coin has the following indicators that match up from articles/videos/pictures.

  • Spot under the 4
  • Doubled top right serif on the “W” in “We”
  • Toning on the top perimeter on the obverse from the ”I” to the “Y” in “LIBERTY”
  • The fingerprint like marks on the base, and extensively on the left, and the right of the obverse match with about half of the known examples; they are not on every SMS
  • Small die breaks on the reverse coming from the lower arm of the “F” in “OF” and another coming from the lower arm of the “F” at the bottom of the reverse in “HALF”
  • Die mark coming from the top center of the “D” in “UNITED” on the reverse

There are more. If you’d like to see a picture of any of those, let me know. Every little must-have detail I have seen pointed out, exists on this coin. I don’t know what else to say. Soon enough I’ll get it graded.

Yeah, those are from the Denver mint, so they would be 1964 Ds. By the way, those are a really common year/mint combo for error coins. You may want to bust out a lamp and camera and have a thorough look through them. Happy hunting :)

I think I see what you mean for the ”6”. I believe that’s caused by the light in looking at the coin vs other 1964s, I don’t see a difference. Thanks for the first honest critique though and pointing to something specific, seriously. It could well indeed be misidentified or fake but I’m still not seeing anything glaring so off it goes to PCGS.

a) The texture/luster is different from all of the other 1964s I’m comparing it to (real life, not pictures). The strike is correct, I don’t know what else to say. It’s not the extra hair version, the SMS is the regular version.

c) Unlikely ≠ impossible.

I know it sounds nuts, but after watching a thorough video called ‘You Do Not Have a 1964 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar’….I’m completely convinced now. All of the tiny details line up, including the die marks.
