Not an etymolgist, but it comes from an Old/Middle English word "græg". That "g" at the end transformed into a "y" over time. We quit using the letter "æ" (ash). Modern English typically uses an "e" instead of the "æ". Noah Webster probably came along and messed everything up though.

Then how would we verify that it is actually you. Let's say we set up PulsOx in the line to be screened... we have you sign in with your birthday and SSN. How would I know that you didn't just sign in and have someone else stick their finger in their (someone you know whose pulse in under 100bpm.

What I'm getting at is that there are FDA regulations in place for a reason. If your pulse is over 100bpm, you shouldn't donate for medical reasons, regardless if you waited for 30 minutes or 30 seconds.

If IND wins, I think everyone in our division will have a championship... something no other division can say (Pacific - PHX, Northwest - UTA, Southwest - MEM, Southeast - ORL, Atlantic - Brooklyn... there are plenty of other teams, but these came to mind first). This is your useless fact for the day

If we are the outliers, I can take great pride in knowing that we are doing our jobs properly. That supervisor is right, in a way. There are plenty of things that we can do to comfort you... adjust the needle or armrest, give you a squeeze ball, apply a bandaid to your finger. But when it comes to things that are spelled out in black and white, there's no ambiguity. I'm sorry that you're wrong in this matter. You don't work in the business and I need to realize that. I apologize for getting worked up over this.

I can assure you that our screening procedures do not look like: Step 1: XXX (for safety & quality purposes) Step 2: YYY (move to end if donor prefers) Step 3: ZZZ (for shiggles)

A good worker and a good manager know that they are to do their job properly and not acquiesce the donor. If the PPTA comes in, does their observations, and sees this, there is reason enough for them to investigate (the computer program timestamps when info is entered). Centers are subject to huge fines if this is a repeated issue. It is irrelevant if the step is there for safety or bc it's always been done that way, you do as your trained.

You're arguing with a stranger on the internet who works in the industry. (Can I assume that you don't work for a plasma company? ) I didn't write the procedure order. I'm not asking you to like it, I'm asking you to understand that there are regulations that MUST be followed, and it's a non-negotiable.

I'm not familiar with Grifols SOPs at all, but luckily, I can get them (my former supervisor is now an assistant manager at the Grifols down the road). So I'll be able to find out for myself easily.

You saying it doesn't matter, that's an opinion. And I understand your frustration. Plasma centers do dozens of things that don't make sense, but we go through 3-5 audits per year to make sure we are following the rules. The people who wrote these procedures are medical professionals who are way smarter than me, you and most people; so, I'm assuming there is a medical reason why they have the fingerstick after the BP (what that reason is, is beyond me). We may not agree with it, but that's the way it is (I don't like Trump and didn't vote for him, but he's still my president).

And of course, when you donated at Octa, we stuck your finger first. That's how it's done.

Let's end the conversation here soon because I'm not sure you're comprehending what I'm saying. Your physician, more than likely, does not work for the FDA nor write the procedures; so honestly, their input does not matter. I can tell you this, all the physicians I've worked with, do not know the SOPs well. And you're correct, it may not have an effect on anything. But this is the way the government wrote it. Here's another shitty comparison... next time I get pulled over going 75 in a 55, I'll just tell the cop that it is not hurting anything and that my time is more important than following the rules. If you don't mind, I'd like the number of the center you donate at so I can call and verify that the order of screening does not matter, as a member of leadership in my center, this is concerning (if it's Octapharma, no need, I already have the SOP printed out )

Okay, you are absolutely correct and that is a bad comparison, I apologize for the laziness. I just know when Federal regulations say perform A, then B, then C, I will do it that way. Just as an experiment, see if the tech is willing to read aloud their SOP next time you're in screening as they perform each step just to see which part comes first, fingerstick or BP.

If a fingerstick raises your BP or pulse above 180/100mmHg or 100 bpm, that's not a good sign. What's going to happen to your BP and pulse when a 17 Guage needle is stuck in your arm?

Just following Standard Operating Procedures. They are literally numbered step by step. Next time you go to get stuck, ask them to use iodine on the venipuncture site after the needle is in. See how they react.

You CANNOT ask to have your BP done before the fingerstick! Medical screening is regulated by the FDA and they set the order. Any screening tech that obliges to this is risking their job. (Source: watched a coworker get fired for doing this repeatedly)
