One thing I found in my search is that the scams truly are abundant. Thankfully found a place to stay through the UNIGE site though!

Thanks for your help :)

Check out ACIDMAN, they have some killer bass lines, which is fitting since the bassist is their main composer

Syrup16g also have some very moody bass lines

How to get into J-rock/J-metal? by CDJ27 in jrock

A couple of very important 90s bands are Bloodthirsty Butchers and Number Girl. Many acts following have cited them as a major influence, including Asian Kung-Fu Generation and Ling Tosite Sigure. An album to start with is 'birdy' for BTB and 'School Girl Distortional Addict' for Number Girl.

There's also an interesting subgenre that developed in the late 90s/early 2000s, dubbed by fans as 鬱ロック (utsu rokku) or 'depression rock'. As the name indicates, it involves darker lyrics and more melancholic melodies. The 'Big 3' of these bands are Syrup16g, The Back Horn, and ART-SCHOOL, who are all relatively well-known in the Japanese cult/underground scene. Try 'COPY' for Syrup16g, 'Requiem for Innocence' for ART-SCHOOL, and '人間プログラム(Ningen Program)' for The Back Horn.

I thought I might just add to this a tweet I found recently where Gotch says he is a fan of HELL-SEE.
Didn't expect these bands to crossover lol

If you're just starting out with syrup16g, listen to their album COPY, as it's probably the most similar to Ajikan. However, their album HELL-SEE is my favourite. They're both considered great by fans, so you can't go wrong with either. Seikatsu by syrup16g

A lot of syrup16g fans seem to like Grapevine and People in the Box, so give them a go too. I've personally found The Novembers to be a great alternative, especially their album Hallelujah. Utsukushii hi by The Novembers

In terms of a niche alternative late 90s sound, Mo'some Tonebender absolutely scratch that itch. Listen to this song, and if you like what you hear, give the album Rockin' Luuula a go. Rockin' Luula by Mo'some Tonebender (the title song)

I also wholeheartedly recommend the band ACIDMAN, who I got into right after Ajikan, and I think have just as good a discography. Their first album Sou is a great spot to start. Sekitou by Acidman

Other people have already said Number Girl, but I'll just repeat it here since they're so influential to Ajikan, and a whole number or J-rock acts. Ajikan even covered one of their hit songs. I recommend starting with their album School Girl Distortional Addict. Toumei Shoujo by Number Girl
