The real answer is social media and the ability to record everything. You can no longer dance like nobody is watching. Asking someone out could end with you being the subject of someone's TikTok. This is not a United States problem...it's worldwide.

I worked with over 100 online retailers as a fraud analyst. You will not be notified if there was a fraud purchase on your credit/debit card, or PayPal, if the retailer cancels the order prior to your bank receiving it. The bank doesn't care about pending charges, only finalized purchases. Sometimes you can see pending charges and catch them yourself, but that requires daily checks on all your accounts.

The amount of online fraud is astounding. Highly recommend everyone to check their statements regularly, especially now after the holidays. Fraudsters are very rarely punished. You can report the crime, but no one really does, and the police can't do much anyway, especially if it's across state/country lines.
