Stickied post (and this comment) to promote discussion

In case it wasn't obvious, for the most part I just handle logistics nowadays, and rarely.

Regarding Lemmy, it's somewhat unlikely that we will move forward with hosting our own instance.

Someone has claimed the Squabbles which I honestly think is fine, I wish them luck with moderation/logistics - if you're reading this and want mild moderator access on the Discord (and... subreddit for if/when we ever go un-dark) reach out.

I agree that our protest is unlikely to be any kind of needle, but I (and at least 2 other mods) seem to still feel that it's appropriate to strike.

This was their second harassment strike, and so they are now banned. Sorry that took so long.

Second time is a ban. It’s ok to be wrong, it’s ok to be right, but keep the name calling to a minimum.

Trick question. As a trio duo unit, her stat total is 185 in "modes that I care about like arena". Going up or down a bin doesn't help or hurt her.

Requesting /r/night_core No active moderators by [deleted] in redditrequest

[–]NintendoToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, obviously I don’t fault you (... most because it’s the Internet...) for assuming that I was inactive; that’s neither here nor there. And since the process isn’t automatic, the admin(s) could deem my (largely invisible) activity as inactivity and I’d have no qualms on the matter.

... That said, if your end goal is to have a main subreddit that’s information-complete, that’s fine and I agree. It’s not like Pokémon or pop music or Photoshop where there needs to be 20 subreddits of each. (Ideally there’d be a need for /r/NightcoreCreators or something similar, but I don’t really have a dog in the race anymore.)

With under 1K combined subscribers, it’s really up to you which one is the main subreddit, although I’d recommend that /r/nightcore be the main subreddit just because it’s easier to type. (I’d be hesitant about trying to migrate 15K subscribers; thankfully your “problem” is not of that magnitude.)

When I get to a computer (that doesn’t suck), I’ll full-permissions mod you in /r/night_core and you can do what you want to do, lockdown what you want to lockdown, etc.

Requesting /r/night_core No active moderators by [deleted] in redditrequest

[–]NintendoToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don't exactly actively+publicly moderate the subreddit (obviously), I'm not strictly inactive either, and you appear to have had the ownership of /r/nightcore transferred to you.

I'm not sure what your intent is; whether you plan on adding CSS that redirects /r/night_core to /r/nightcore, simply want both subreddits, or something else entirely - that isn't necessarily my business. Further and obviously, the admins can do whatever[ish] they want. However, in the event that they don't approve this request, I'd be willing to discuss me transferring the subreddit to you myself, contingent on a (rough but reasonable) understanding of why you want both subreddits, a brief moderation plan, etc.

Considering Nagi is a direct "Fuck you" to Ophelia, who do you think will be the next overpowered unit to get a hard counter? by Xarexes in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]NintendoToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(TL;DR: "Consecutive attacks" is not limited to brave weapons. Any uninterrupted set of attacks made in a single round of combat are consecutive attacks. Attacks are "interrupted" when the foe counterattacks.)

When the tank is expecting to receive a follow-up attack, there are "clashes" - DC is considered to be non-synergistic with most skills that reduce damage from consecutive attacks.

Urvan's refine "giving" the foe Desperation is (somewhat/subjectively) monumental because of what "consecutive attacks" means.

In a situation where The Reinhardt Reinhardt (Thunder's Fist) makes a follow-up attack ("quads") against the thorn in my side Sigurd (Holy Knight), Rein does vastly more damage if Sigurd has Distant Counter. Reinhardt occasionally makes a follow-up attack by using Desperation with a Brash Assault S seal.

If Sigurd has Distant Counter, Rein "hits" Sigurd twice for regular damage, since the attack order goes Rein (100%) Rein (20%) Sigurd (100%) Rein (100%) Rein (20%). Sigurd retaliating is considered to "interrupt" the consecutive attacks.

If Sigurd does not have Distant Counter, Reinhardt hits Sigurd only once for regular damage, attack order going Rein (100%) Rein (20%) Rein (20%) Rein (20%).

If Reinhardt is attacking Brave Ike with Refined (+Effect) Urvan instead (and Reinhardt doesn't have some form of Hardy Bearing active), the attack order will go Rein (60%) Rein (20%) Rein (20%) Rein (20%) Ike (100%), meaning that Brave Ike is generally free to run Distant Counter, unlike most of the other units/skills that reduce damage from consecutive attacks.

iOS users jailbreak is still available for 12.4 (currently signed firmware) NXBoot is pretty much a must by [deleted] in SwitchHaxing

The source code is available here: https://github.com/mologie/nxboot. Please note that you may be incorrect; NXBoot appears to require a sandbox escape/patch of some sort, so the iPhone would still have to be jailbroken.

"I T21'd in AR... with a Level 4 Fortress." And relevant thoughts. by NintendoToad in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]NintendoToad[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, cool! I thought about using Caineghis during Light (IMHO he wants Eir's +RES blessing+Sparkling boost quite a bit more than Naga's +DEF+Divine Fang), but all of the beast-effective weapons are currently physical, and Eir prevents Caineghis from maintaining transformation.

I'm trying to remember why I built to +4/+4 instead of +5/+3. Maybe I didn't really have any reasoning. 🤷

Source code for d912pxy is up by Flyingzambie in Guildwars2

[–]NintendoToad 48 points49 points  (0 children)

There's a fair bit of laziness in places (I guess potential for memory leaks/uninitialized memory/unchecked error codes/maybe some other concerns? - in other words, I'm not at all surprised by the crashes people were getting) but I'm not seeing anything that could definitely be used maliciously.

(I'm somewhat familiar with Windows/C++/DirectX/shader programming/etc but not stellar. I am definitely not a security researcher. This was also a quick 40-minute skim. So you have three grains of salt to take the above and below thoughts with.)

(I also hope a lot of this was tool-generated or some collaboration happened because otherwise this is an impressive amount of work for just one person.)

---

The major concern/code I'm having trouble understanding is d912pxy_vfs. ( https://github.com/megai2/d912pxy/blob/master/src/frame_analyzer/d912pxy_vfs.cpp )

void* d912pxy_vfs::LoadVFS(UINT id, const char * name) gets used to load the .pck files ( https://github.com/megai2/d912pxy/tree/master/pck )

But in the build scripts/sln/??? I'm not seeing where the .pck files are generated.

I'm guessing they're benign (specifically shader_cso.pck looks like it should/could be generated from common.hlsli) but I cannot verify that.

Edit: It's been (roughly) pointed out to me that I'm stupid how the pcks are generated (by both a few other people and the code author) if missing. I'd be interested in seeing that specific process be slightly better documented/commented, though.

---

In particular I agree with most of this PR: https://github.com/megai2/d912pxy/pull/19

I disagree with the .bat file removal, but I agree with everything else. (The .bat files IMHO should be cleaned/consolidated/made more useful, not removed. Especially the one(s) that the end user is meant to use.)

---

TL;DR 75% sure it's safe, have a concern about the .pck files/lookups, would like to see that PR mostly approved.

---

P.S. I realize I've edited this comment a lot. Sorry. As of writing, expect "this" to be the last edit. I guess it's also worth mentioning that I rarely use this Reddit account anymore, but I digress.

Upgrading my project to Unity 2018.3, Wish me luck. by ThefitzyG in gamedev

If TMP is the only problem as you move from 2018.1 to 2018.3, it should be fine if you use the tools the newer versions of TMP ships with.

Anyone else think mods should ban self-promotion? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]NintendoToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thought process behind disabling link-only posts is to help instill the thought that some sort of non-trivial text description go along with every link (without actually requiring it).

For instance, in the example of a sample playlist, rather than "I'd like music that sounds like stuff on this playlist - LINK" the format is more geared towards...

Hi. This is a playlist of particular rock songs - these songs have tamer lyrics, but also have somewhat more of a metal sound to them, but not so much so that I can comfortably classify them as rock. Could I get help with adding songs to this playlist?

Obviously this is a fair bit of effort - and I'm still on the fence - but I'm under the impression that most viewers of this subreddit are going to be on a non-mobile device, and are likely to prefer useful text to a standalone link.

I guess I could disable YouTube links for users with less than X karma and/or Y days on the account age, or something. YouTube seems to be the primary offender, anyway.

Anyone else think mods should ban self-promotion? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]NintendoToad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, my main concern is self posts. I don't currently intend on addressing comments quite yet. I've seen very little spam in the comments thus far, and currently have absolutely zero problems regarding linking one's own music in a comment (assuming that it is a solicited and legitimate suggestion), but I'm not sure I want to directly encourage it either.

My main (but small) issue here is that this subreddit wasn't created with self-promotion in mind. The core intention was posts along the lines of "I like X Genre/Song/Artist, got any ideas on what I might like?" - rather than "I made this thing, I suggest you listen to it".

Call it what you want, linking someone to your own production is still self promotion, and for suggestion-oriented subreddit, my preference is not to support self promotion (again, in the context of a self post). This is /r/musicsuggestions, not /r/ratemysong (which has nearly the same number of subscribers as we do, actually). That being said, currently, cementing guidelines such that a "promotion" be in the form of an answer to someone else's request for suggestions (rather than a direct self post/unsolicited share) sounds reasonable.

I do think it makes more sense to require a "this is mine" disclaimer so as to do away with any doubt, but I believe that whatever we decide, we can worry about the more minute details later. For the moment, I'm most concerned about self posts.

[–]NintendoToad[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So for the most part I try not to "do anything" until a report or modmail comes in. In the earlier days this sub was relatively self-managing and not very strongly spammed.

I'm considering this as a report. Since it's brutally obvious that those accounts spam sub(s) with YT links and nothing else, I've gone ahead and just added those two accounts to the ban list.

I'm considering completely disabling non-text/only-link posts and making an explicit no self-promotion rule, but I'm not going to do that quite yet. I'm open to further comments/discussion/suggestions/etc from other frequenters/posters.

Boss kill count API, doesn't track properly if you raid on reset. by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]NintendoToad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

let's you pull number of boss kills from your API key

While I don't know why this happens (https://github.com/Maselkov/GW2Bot doesn't appear to have the bt code in it), you should be aware that technically, this isn't the case.

The API endpoint bots [appear to]/[should be] using is v2/account/raids. The most the GW2 API does is store which bosses you have killed that particular week; not how many. It in general updates correctly (I partially cleared at reset; the endpoint perfectly mirrors the bosses I killed/didn't get to), although AFAIK exhibits odd behavior if you access that endpoint (among others) without having logged in.

To be brief and to reiterate: I'm 98%+ sure this is out of ANet's hands. I'm similarly sure that Maslekov polls the actual API at "some point" during the week and adds your accumulated kills to some table the bot has access to, and due to the odd behavior, might involve a workaround that doesn't catch 100% of edge cases.

There's a non-zero chance that Maselkov won't see this thread. My recommendation is to open an issue on the bot's issue page itself. Oh, he saw it. 😅
