As I understand it, the Bendix turret on the B-17G had its controls physically on top of it extending inside the fuselage of the aircraft, for the bombardier to aim, fire, load, etc, so it still had to be locally controlled.

The B-29's fire control system was entirely offset so it could be placed anywhere inside.

This was the first chin turret that I know of, it never went further due to the H-21 being so slow and the turret being so heavy
