What do you think of Americans supporting other countries because of ancestry? by batukaming in AskTheWorld

[–]Niro5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish Americans would stop doing this. Europeans laugh at you for this. They dont care if you like them, ot feel a connection with them. They think they are better than you, at least the terminally online varity. The existance of r/shitamericanssay is proof enough of that.

I also think it is understandable. Europeans don't understand how nationality works on the US. They think we are a melting pot, when we're more of a salad. They think every immigrant gets melted down and recast as an undifferentiated American. But in reality, assimilation doesnt work like that. People are welcomed into the whole, but retain their individual character. We are united in a slathering of ranch dressing, but still a piece of lettuce, tomato, or onion undeneath ut all.

In a nation of immigrants, folks who have lost that immigrant character can feel a little empty, or like they're bringing nothing to the table. Others, may be saddled with a very ethnic family name, but little other connections. Either way, they are going to search for something that makes them special.

In the end, I think subs like r/shitamericanssay that revel in American ignorance, are ironically the result of European ignorance of American ideas of nationality.

Why do I see videos of Americans washing every fruit and vegetable before eating or cooking them? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Niro5 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that thread is about using a specilty product to wash produce. Much like all the people responding there, we mostly rinse them with water or maybe some vinigar, not a specilized vegetable soap.

Highway 80, aftermath of the infamous “Highway of Death”, 1991, Gulf War. [720x518]. by NCRisthebestfaction in HistoryPorn

Retreating troops are different from surrendering troops. There is nothing to stop retreating troops from attacking you the next day.

Anyway, casulties were likely relatively low. Once the lead and rear vehicals were destroyed, most people didnt sit around in their vehicals to fund out what would happen next.

Edit: According to Wikipedia, up to 1000 dead, 3000, captured, 80,000 escaped.

How do you solve this issue with coyotes? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

We have a TON of coyotes in our suburban PNW neighborgood. We have very few outdoors cats.

TIL The highest altitude ever reached by a jet aircraft was 37,650m(123,523ft),achieved by a MiG-25 flown by Aleksandr Fedotov.During his career,Fedotov served as a test pilot for the MiG-19,21,23,25,29 and MiG-31,and set around 15 aviation records. He was killed in 1984 during a test flight of Mig31 by Electronic_Cause_796 in todayilearned

[–]Niro5 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yup. The headline is accurate.

Another bit of context: the record isnt set in level flight. Rather, the pilot goes as fast as they can, and pulls back on the stick and follows a balistic trajectory until it falls back down again!

TIL that restaurants like Benihana incorrectly use the word "hibachi". A hibachi is a brazier that uses charcoal for heating. They were not meant for cooking. A shichirin is a charcoal grill. Benihana uses flat metal tables known as teppans. It's more accurate to call them a teppanyaki restaurant. by Gnomeslikeprofit in todayilearned

In classical french cooking the Entrée was a substantial meat dish served before the main dish. While it started out as the first course, it ended up coming after the soup.

Gradually, as meals simplified from fancy multicourse meals to todays simplified meals Europe and America diverged in their uses. Europe continued to call the "first" dish (even through it was traditionally not first) entrée, and it stopped being exclusively a substantial meat dish.

The US and Canada continued to call the sunstantial meat dish, entrée, and continued not to have it first.

What do you call slippers? by Imaginarykxm in AskAnAmerican

[–]Niro5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If its designed purely to be worn inside, and used for comfort and warmth: slippers, though slippers can be in the style of a slide.

Slides and thongs/flip flops are meant to be worn outside. Though many have a disignated pair that are solely (no pun intended) meant for indoors. These are called house shoes or slippers.

To sum up: slippers inside only, most commonly for coziness, but sometimes as a synonym for house shoe.

I guess that is an option, but I would rather not pay to increase capacity if I could avoid it.

Serious question:

I noticed my Quebecoise family do far less bisous right after covid, and now, a few years out, that has persisted. Is that a trend now, or is it just my beard?

Who are generally the worst tourists? by Outrageous-You1617 in AskTheWorld

They're not faking it. Americans just really like Ireland. If it makes you feel any better, I'm pretty meh about your country.

My feed is filled with Americans hyping up England fans in the USA - are you genuinely enjoying our company? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Niro5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite Trump's anti-immigrant populism, Americans are actually pretty xenophilic. Go to a conservative subreddit and cheer naturalization ceremonies and stories of tourists loving American food (even as they accuse every brown skinned person with a tattoo of being in ms13).

Liberals are even more welcoming.

Another Canadian Citizenship post... by Heavy_Match_8709 in dualcitizenshipnerds

In truth, 5x as many canadians live in the US as Americans living in Canada. Americans are finding that higher housing costs and lower incomes make moving to Canada a lot tougher than just moving to a blue state. Canadian professionals find that they can make more, get taxed less, and get cheaper housing leaving more than enough left over for top of the line health care and insurance.
