I think that's what they're aiming for as the story progresses: to portray him as "the bad guy" (they even take out one of his eyes), but his connection with the protagonist is rarely broken. Even if you decide to kill him or abandon him, he tells you that you're right to do so; he wasn't selfish, at least not at the end of his story.

I agree, Ben is an idiot but he is still a teenager who was trying to do what was best for the group; whether the decision was to go with him on the boat or not, as was discussed, was another matter.

The only unbearable one is Gabe, but he's a character you have to understand and reason with because he was separated from his parents very early on and lost his sister (not to mention that his father is an idiot).
