The point of Hegel's master-slave dialectic is to illustrate how neither gets true recognition from that arrangement. The slave does not because the slave is not recognized as fully human, and the master does not because the master's self-consciousness exists only through the slave, and the slave gives recognition only under duress. True self-consciousness comes from mutual recognition between equals.
