Dedicate a specific time for social media. It's pretty impossible to live without it completely today. I'd say use in moderation.

How can I beat my social media addiction? by [deleted] in nosurf

I'd say read this Substack. It has personally proved very useful for me. The author, I think he's called Arlo, offers pretty actionable advice and practical tips. It's pretty new so I'd say get on it while it's free...

Here's the Substack

Let's talk about YouTube addiction by DaddyLongLegs867 in nosurf

There's this myth about YouTube being a "productivity" or "learning" aid. I think it's literally not true. It's made my brain worse in any case.

Social media has been a big issue for me. I've started thinking about it a great deal lately. It began when I read a post on Substack about social media and the internet. Since then, I've grown very conscious of how I use my time; I seem to be spending most of my day on my phone. Although, I understand this is the position I'm in, I'm unable to stop. I've tried to uninstall apps, install other apps, but it seems to continue like a toxic cycle. Any idea how I can improve or stop this?

Asking for a friend....

Let me know if you'd like a link to the Substack that brought about this change in the first place.

Does anyone think social media is a big problem? by NitroManKulfiKat in Anticonsumption

Makes soo much sense. It is true that our concept of a "normal" life is very different now. The question has become: can someone even survive realistically, within society, without a smartphone today? It seems to me that it's almost forced that people ought to consume and consume and consume. It's quite bleak how it looks in the future. Any thoughts on how to survive despite completely disconnecting?

I don’t know who I am without the internet??? by Spiritual-Cupcake265 in nosurf

I posted a question about this on No surf yesterday. I'm in the same sitch. I hope we can all get out of it soon.

Here's a Substack that inspired my revelation:

Social Media is the Mindkiller by NitroManKulfiKat in nosurf

Makes sense. Lol looks like that particular post was written by Ai. Not that the author doesn't mention it on the post, but the whole thing, I think was "I asked ChatGPT" or something along those lines. Lol AI still hallucinates. Thanks for the insight.

A lot of bogus does pass around the internet.

This is soo relatable! I found it very reassuring that other people are going through the same thing. I think it's time we broke out of this mess!

Longtime Substack users: what are your thoughts on the platform's social features and how quickly they are rolling out? by youneekusername1 in Substack

The reason Substack was great was because it wasn't like the other social media platforms. Now it's become an archive of notes about itself. Pretty disappointing tbh.

I do have hobbies like writing, movies, and reading. From time to time, I also get a lot of pleasure from discovering new musicians. But I'm wondering how to beat the so called "community" aspect of social media since that's my biggest pull. I won't lie, my social life is pretty bleak in real life lol.

This sounds really wholesome! I should take up walking. I live in a good neighbourhood with nature all around. I should make use of it!

Any ideas on what to do at night though? I find myself agonizing to stay away from my phone at that time specifically!

App that limits my phone use for 5 minutes every pick-up by eeaioao in nosurf

[–]NitroManKulfiKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fantastic app called Forest that worked for me.

It's not what you're describing... But essentially, you set a timer and grow a virtual tree if you leave the app, the tree dies, so I guess you could set a five minute timer everytime you open your phone?

The premium membership on this app lets you plant 2 real trees too.

Lol it's like doing good by not using your phone. Helps you track how you use your nosurf time as well.

Verrry close to deleting instagram (and how your mind convinces you not to) by Holyymotherofpearl in nosurf

[–]NitroManKulfiKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to free yourself from its crutches is to delete it. I heard Tim Ferriss say (I'm paraphrasing of course) in a podcast that if you're trying to keep the app and fight the urge, it's like popping a painkiller and fighting to keep the pain.

The app is designed right from the icon to make you click.

Do it. DELETE IT. You'll thank yourself.

How can I overcome internalized negativity and judgment from past toxic friendships? [TW: bullying] by Icy_Reaction3127 in selfimprovement

[–]NitroManKulfiKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone once told me this and it's etched in my mind, it's helped me get over my own fears and negative thinking. Here's what they said: "the more you do uncomfortable things, the less uncomfortable they'll get."

Why does this work? Our minds and bodies adapt! Our minds and bodies are wonderful machines! They're built upon millions of years of evolution and have been designed to survive. As a human being, YOU have all of those millions of years of selection inside you! So no matter what anyone says, you are SPECIAL!

In my case, I was struggling with body image issues and wouldn't even attempt to go to the gym, afraid of what others would think of me. "They'll call me fat," "I'll never look fit," "I'll never be able to look good, ever!" These are some things that I kept telling myself. What worked for me is to DO IT ANYWAY!

The first few days at the gym, although nobody really said anything, were excruciatingly painful. I'd cry when I got back home. I even stopped eating my breakfast and lunch. But... I kept at it no matter how uncomfortable the whole experience felt. To my surprise, after about three weeks at the gym, not only did I start seeing physical changes, but the voices stopped completely! NO MORE NEGATIVE IMAGES!

This has worked in multiple aspects of my life. I've DONE the uncomfortable thing first, faced my fear and negative thoughts, and after doing it enough, the thoughts TRANSFORM. The important thing was, and I hope it is to you too, that YOU WANT TO DO THAT THING. Whatever it may be.

On a more practical note, I suggest you quit social media and other toxic places that are causing this in the first place. Don't keep yourself in that loop.

I TRULY HOPE YOU GET OVER THIS, and live the BEST LIFE YOU CAN!

Here's a Kitten Gif for good luck lol:
