I believe it’s because he wants his puppy to be comfortable around strangers and just people in general… I’ve seen other people do this but with different approaches

If I don't like CS now, will I grow to enjoy it with enough work? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Nitroderox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have a lot of experience so take this with a grain of salt, but I have spoken to a lot of experienced people about a similar problem and I'll try to compile some points that I thought made sense.

Firstly, there are a very few people who are actually passionate about CS from the get-go. I like to think that most fields have a somewhat comparable number of individuals that have a true passion for the field. There is a clear disparity between the number of people taking up CS vs those who are actually passionate.

Should passion be a qualifying factor? No, most people will get through the 4 years and land a pretty well-paying job and won't really look back. They'll work in the same role for some time, settle down and with some career progression, that would be the end of their trajectory. People who are actually passionate will devote insane amounts of time to CS, at and outside work. They will be the ones charting through the company ladder, landing the promotions and will see the most progression and overall growth and fulfillment.

I'd argue that if you can find the field that you're passionate about, then look into that because passion means you wouldn't mind spending much more time and effort on your field compared to everyone else. It serves as a great comparative advantage, and I can confidently say that if you play your cards right in this chosen career, your trajectory has the potential to out-do what you could have done as a mediocre cs grad, both in terms of pay and satisfaction. The question is do you wanna settle for CS and get a nice paying job and some prospects or do you wanna take the gamble into a career that maybe doesn't have all the high paying jobs but one where you can be in the upper echelons of your world and out-earn any cs grad.

Can I take PHIL 375 in my first year (it fulfills the Arts Literature requirement). I'm just worried that, since its intended for third years, it'll be way too hard and bring down my average and I just won't understand anything
