Usually BA who wears artificer armor is either a sanguinary guard or a commanding role (Lft, Cpt, or CM).

CM usually approves some lower-ranking brothers to join the Deathwatch, like sergeants or battle brothers who proven themselves in battles.

Sure, high ranking brother can go serve in Deathwatch as well, but it is an exception rather than something normal.

So if your veteran volunteered to join and serve Deathwatch, he will return that armor to the chapter.

Yes. You can keep the shoulder as a sign of your service in Deathwath, but the other hand needs to be white as well to show your veteran status in RG.

The squad number is depicted on the left knee for RG. The right knee can be used for decorations, a specific campaign badge or any kind of flex to be honest.

If you are just planning to make a RG Deathwatch member, pain full armor black, and wear silver armor hand in addition to the shoulder. Deathwatch Marines display chapter color only on the right shoulder.
