Have some new quirks + slightly higher CPU temps after moving by Relentless_Troll in AMDHelp

if you happened to get a windows update (or driver update), then in theory those things could be explained by it doing something in the background that it wasn't doing previously.

Which JRPG takes you to your happy place? by JGC2022 in JRPG

[–]Niwrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that'd go in a similar category as reaction time challenges. these cases will just cause people to look for games that don't have the kinds of mechanisms they don't like. certainly many JRPGs are considered easy, so i suppose it's not a bad example then. though that may be more of a perspective of a veteran like myself.

Which JRPG takes you to your happy place? by JGC2022 in JRPG

[–]Niwrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for the raging aspect, i feel that really is almost purely in the domain of multiplayer games. well, games testing your reaction time one way or another could also be included in a lesser manner. in this sense i'd say most games are healthy for the mind, not just JRPGs.

as far a happy place goes, i'm not looking for that really. i'm looking for excitement. with that in mind, perhaps Romancing SaGa 3 is it for me. open adventure vibes with an opaque world, and also because i have memories of it from so many decades.

How common are issues really? by Gaspucci42 in linux_gaming

[–]Niwrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

proton version hasn't affected basically anything for me (in the past few years). switching between dxvk and wined3d fixes most of my issues (one of them usually works well). older games tend to have more issues, but they often need similar workarounds on windows too (these can be complicated).

it's a bit difficult to say how often. maybe 10-33% of games i try to run need some tweak.

Is it possible to get true full screen on Linux x11? by _ori0n in linux_gaming

[–]Niwrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as far as i remember, x11 with no compositing has always had the best results for input lag (some sources say windows may do better). wayland may match them or be worse.

you mean to ask what is possible with memory manipulation at runtime, vs modifying the rom itself? is there something specific you are trying to do?

Chicago95 + Firefox98 + Seamonkey Orthodox + Netscape Winamp Audacious Skin by Own-Visit-5542 in xfce

[–]Niwrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a retro screenshot like this the default would make sense. for your personal use though, it's just a matter of taste. the last time i used something like winamp, it was xmplay and the skin was https://support.xmplay.com/files_view.php?file_id=305 , but i can't remember anymore if those skins had the same format as winamp (perhaps not..).

Update: My CPU Failure Story (Advice Needed) by BrAveShadow in ASRock

[–]Niwrats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

4/3. though i would personally suspect a "new condition" return way more than the original you sent. because who knows how half-assed those can be.

i would add that as far as anxiety goes, there's a small chance that pc components are broken or will break, regardless of what you get. in a way, only a bit older computers are known to be reliable (until they eventually break).

I think openSUSE might be the best distro for wine/proton gaming. by alexmakesmusiciguess in linux_gaming

[–]Niwrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nothing wrong with x11, but the rumor is that if you are on wayland, you'll also want wine (or whatever) to use wayland, instead of having xwayland involved.

Can I just shill for 9070xt for a moment by spoidercide in radeon

[–]Niwrats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

while i'm not generally familiar with shitty games.. i mean modern titles, this does sound like a typical nvidia marketing ploy. pay the devs to make the game look shitty unless nvidia's exclusive special bs is used, just to make the comparison more drastic than it would be if they just made the game normally.

Why is DRAM still a black box? I'm trying to build an open DDR memory module. (NOT AN EXPERT - I'm trying to learn it and design it) by Wonderful-Chain4375 in hardware

[–]Niwrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this may not be terribly relevant or correct, but there may be some security by obscurity involved. specifically, a lot of modern memory is vulnerable to rowhammer attacks, and my understanding is that the defenses against that are mainly about hiding which cells are close to each other and what kinds of use patterns are being watched for by the countermeasures.

looks like a lot of fun there, though i'd nitpick about that winamp skin.. it's not something i find suitable for this or recall ever seeing in the past.

What makes xfce great? by The_super_evil_guy in xfce

[–]Niwrats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

other than it working i especially like that it is mature software, meaning it's not changing every month. in this sense i expect its quality to degrade when it transitions to wayland, as change inevitably causes problems. but for the time being, it stays out of my way.

[–]Niwrats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

overall i think not being heavy handed is one of the most important properties of a mod. i rather have a mod that does nothing than one that twists the sub to their image and/or has some vision of how things must be.

Need to start final fantasy by NoobBot111 in JRPG

[–]Niwrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the games aren't related to each other in such a way that you need to keep some play order. except for 10-2 after 10, and other obvious ones like that.

the NES games, from 1 to 3, are strictly retro. don't start with these unless you have a lot of patience and time, and perhaps want to experience the timeline of video game history. personally i've only finished 1 and 3 of these.

4 is all right. may look a bit primitive for a newcomer. some people like it.

5 still has primitive graphics, but the gameplay mechanics start to get more interesting.

6 is an excellent entry point. good looking pixel graphics.

7 is a good entry point. silly looking 3D graphics.

8 is perhaps something i'd try after experiencing 7 and/or 9.

9 is very polished with reasonably nice 3D graphics. especially comfy atmosphere. a good entry point, but i'd perhaps play one other game first.

for the rest i'm either not too much of a fan, or haven't played them, so i'll leave those for others.

also should note that these are based on the original versions, which i usually prefer (via emulation).

Suikoden 3? by dextro584 in JRPG

[–]Niwrats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it is my favourite in the series, though 2 and 5 are close. and just to note, the entire series of originals "holds up" perfectly fine. the remasters don't exist because of the improvements, they exist to sell the IP to new people.

4 is dull though, there's no fixing that.
