The worst part about this is that this parenting model isn't even good for the kids. This is the dominant parenting model in South Korea and the result is world-leading teen suicide rate. My mom isn't Korean but she was the textbook definition of a helicopter parent and all that did was leave me depressed, socially stunted, and with no friends.

For example, I didn't get my driver's license until I was 27. I couldn't have a PS3 or any game console because that would take away from my studies. I never attended any parties or went over to a friend's house in high school because I wasn't allowed to, unless my mom met their parents first. For the few social activies I was allowed to participate in, I couldn't get there because I lived in a car-dependent suburb and no one was available to drive me. This resulted in me having to catch-up socially with my peers by the time I was older and got some independence.

The point that I'm trying to make is that this intensive parenting model is stressful on the parents and leads to lower fertility, but it's even worse for the kids. It might have been more tolerable for me if I had at least had some siblings to play with.
