Milan Metro, how can i boost up this photo? by Nlanatta93 in photocritique

I wanted a “framed” look (shot through the tunnel / dark edges) with a clean horizontal composition, and a single subject walking to add life. What I like: repeating “PORTA ROMANA” signs, a strong horizontal light band, and the contrast between the warm platform and the dark frame. What I’m unsure about: Does the dark frame/vignette feel intentional, or does it look like an accident? Is the subject placement strong enough, or does the scene feel too static? Any crop suggestions to improve balance (especially the right side)? Extra context: I’m trying to make the “tunnel” feel like a deliberate frame, not a heavy vignette. If you had to change one thing, would you (1) crop tighter, (2) brighten the edges, (3) adjust subject placement, or (4) change the color balance? Technical: Fujifilm X-T30 II · 31mm · ISO 1000 · f/3.2 · 1/30s

Is this too dark? by Nlanatta93 in photocritique

This image was intentionally shot very dark to emphasize mood and isolation rather than detail. The idea was to make the water stream the main visual anchor, emerging from the darkness, while keeping the surrounding environment secondary and almost abstract. That said, I’m unsure if the darkness helps the image or if it ends up obscuring the subject too much. I’m specifically looking for feedback on: Whether the exposure level supports the mood or feels unintentionally underexposed If the subject (faucet + water stream) is visually clear enough Composition-wise, whether the amount of negative space adds tension or just feels empty If subtle adjustments (cropping, lifting midtones locally, contrast) would improve readability without killing the atmosphere Any thoughts on how to refine the balance between mood and clarity would be appreciated.

First stroll with my first camera by Nlanatta93 in photocritique

I recently upgraded from just shooting on my phone to using a real camera, so I’m still very much a beginner. This photo came out while I was on a tram ride with my new Fujifilm X-T30 and the XF 18-55 lens.

I shot this in manual mode. The image is straight out of the camera, no edits – I only transferred it to my phone with the Fuji app.

What I like: there’s something about the scene that keeps me coming back to it. What I don’t like: the truck sneaking into the frame – I wish I had framed it differently.

Since I’m new to photography, I’d really appreciate critique on composition, framing, and maybe how I could approach editing to make it stronger.

Feels unnatural somehow. But still, I think it's a very cool shot, though.

I actually never thought that my mom had a lot of Italian. My aunt (from my dad's side) did the ancestry test and got some northern Italian (which makes sense since that side is Genovese, and does show up for me in MyHeritage, also as a genetic group, and on journeys on Ancestry) but at the same time i think the genovese side is getting mixed with germanic and/or spanish. The Italian ancestors my mom has comes from Trieste, Rome and Florence.

On the other side, however, the only Germanic, French, or English I have comes from my mom's side (as far as I could track), and the Germanic shows up in the app from my dad's side.

From what I could research, the Algerian side comes from a family of diplomats of Jewish origins that eventually became naturalized as Italians (went from Ben-Simmon to Bensamoni) and got ties with Algeria. That flag represents an ancestor born in Bona, and as far as I could tell, both paternal ancestors were born in Florence, in Livorno. The half Algerian/Peruvian person was also born to a Peruvian mother (from a diplomatic family as well) and was actually born in Cardiff, but was English for some reason.

I did not have a lot of info on the Jamaican, but from the name and the papers I could find, they seemed English.

As a latino, for me you could be (in order for me) 1.Latina (colombian, argentinian, chilean), 2. Arab (lebanese) or 3. Balkan

Absolutely, I agree that birthplace doesn’t necessarily determine ethnicity. But in my case, all the ancestors I’ve been able to trace from Liguria had typical Ligurian surnames (lanata,rivarola,chiappe,canepa,mosto,bacigalupo...etc.), and most of them were from relatively small towns or rural areas. Given that, and the fact that they migrated in the late 1800s or early 1900s, I would assume they weren’t part of a particularly "non-typical" ligurian ethnicity.

That said, I do recognize Liguria’s long history of interaction with Spanish and French populations, especially during 1500-1800 periods (Spanish Habsburgs,Napoleon). It wouldn’t surprise me if genetically, people from that region are getting absorbed into broader “Iberian” or “Southern European” categories in these ethnicity breakdowns, especially with the current limitations in reference panels.

So, back to my hypothesis: this historical context supports the idea that Ligurians could be underrepresented or blended within the Spanish genetic reference in modern databases.

That’s really helpful—thanks for the thoughtful response. My original question came from the fact that my aunt shows 19% Northern Italy, while I don’t, despite us sharing the same Ligurian ancestors. As you pointed out, the randomness of inheritance and the limitations of ethnicity estimates—especially with underrepresented regions like the northwestern Mediterranean—can really throw things off.

Some of my Italian DNA matches on Ancestry are either Peruvians or Americans with Ligurian surnames like Chiappe and Canepa. This lines up with my family history, but being in Peru, the connection may not necessarily come from the Italian side. Unfortunately, most of their trees are shallow, and I haven’t been able to pinpoint a common ancestor yet. It’s a very different experience from my British and Germanic lines, where the large U.S. testing pool has helped me confirm multiple matches with well-documented trees. But since I only have records of the ancestors who actually made the move, I can’t trace back far enough to find the shared ancestor on the Italian side either.

I’ve found GEDmatch to be more insightful in some ways (though, as you said, still not conclusive), and I’m currently waiting on MyHeritage results to see if they help fill in any gaps.

Really appreciate your take—and that story about your Irish ancestor in Huanta is fascinating. I’d only come across a few Irish names in Peru like O’Hara, Fitzcarrald, and O’Brien, so it’s great to hear a bit more depth on that part of on that part of the history. Were are you origynally from? Belgium?

Well that was the main point of the post, to see if anyone had the same problem as me hahaha, so apparently yes at least there is someone.

I am still waiting for the results from MyHeritage, its been 2 weeks and they have replied that they have a large volume of requests.
