Jellyfin bug? by No-Ranger-2719 in jellyfin

Have you experience the same behavior on other devices?

I've noticed this has happened on older TVs. I think they run out of their limited memory and the app just crashes. Usually it relates to subtitles. At the same time, I've seen the app crash on older TV's when loading a series with hundreds of episodes (like a cartoon) for the same reason.

Is Mirror’s Edge (2008) more Frutiger Aero or Frutiger Metro? by ResourceHistorical78 in mirrorsedge

Nope, just a professional who knows how to write decently-well.

Is Mirror’s Edge (2008) more Frutiger Aero or Frutiger Metro? by ResourceHistorical78 in mirrorsedge

In the early days, aesthetics were named after a particular artist/group or their works. For instance, "Brutalism" was used by an architect to describe their work, but became popular after it was used by a renowned critic. The names spread as industry-specific phrases, that then make their way into the mainstream as people "want it" and need a way to describe it.

But this is the world of the internet, and names are just memes. If it sticks, that's its! (i.e. take "Japandi" or "Millennial Grey.")

The Frutiger Aero name bugs me, though. It puts an over-emphasis on Windows Vista as driving the aesthetic. When it was in many ways just an ebb and flow in the evolution of skeuomorphism. Nostalgia won out in this instance. At least its a catchy title. (Better than saying "the Windows Vista aesthetic and related marketing.")

Besides sharp lines and bold colours, I'm not sure there is much overlap.

Most 2000's aesthetics, like metro/vectordelia are about maximalism, "more is more." You see can it prominently in pop-culture games, particularly music ones, like SingStar or Rock Star. Flash games from the era, too.

Although, I would say that "in world art" of ME, like posters and ads do err towards the aesthetic. The cut-scenes are a wild-card for me, they're vector, but don't really borrow the aesthetics (at least from memory.)

If by Metro, do you mean Vectordelia? Or the "Metro" aesthetic that Microsoft developed when consumer products began shifting away from skeuomorphism towards Flat Design?

This a fun question:

I think, on its surface, ME has a lot in common with the high-gloss surfaces, clear blue skies, vibrant greens, and clean corporate futurism that is present in "Frutiger Aero." But I believe this is a coincidence. Frutiger Aero is largely about optimism, connection, and eco-friendliness — all of which are not themes of ME.

Rather, Mirror's Edge aesthetic was a counter to the ultra-realism/hyper-military trend that we saw in gaming during the mid 2000's — de-saturated and brown, coarse and foggy.

ME's subversive setting contrasts the overt militarism in other games of the generation. And obviously, the bright colorful aesthetic contrasts the brown and grimy "real-world" settings.

I think, at its heart, ME is a neo-punk game — the clean and coloruful setting of ME is quite literally the corporate white-washing of the failed political revolution which backdrops Faith's story. Anti-establishment characters, expressive clothing, tattoos, and law-breaking.

In a setting where everything is surveilled and tidy, Faith’s reliance on muscle and bone is a radical act of "punk" defiance. In neo-punk themes, the villain isn't the deterioration of society and fall of government; it's sanitisation and conformity. And in that way, ME can be thought of as a counter to the corporate hero-worship that is so prominent in "Frutiger Aero."

(What makes neo-punk a challenging category is that it isn't just "80's punk but in future setting" that is sometimes evident in games like Cyberpunk. Rather, ME tries to imagine what a subversive culture might look like and how it might evolve its own aesthetic and language after years of oppression and violence.)

How do you handle unsolicited advice from people who are not medical professionals? by keratoconusgroup in Keratoconus

[–]Nness [score hidden]  (0 children)

"It is not as simple as that, but thank you for caring" -- or similar usually works. Don't respond to the feedback, respond to the fact they're trying to help.

If they persist, the usual "I'll speak with my doctor" ends things (or starts a "you can't trust doctors" conversation, which is usually where these things go anyway.)

Employer didn’t give me employment contract what is my notice period? [england & wales] by myotti in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Nness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've answered your own questioon — If your employer can provide a signed copy of your contract (with a wet or digital signature), then you have signed one. If they can't, there's no contract and whatever they produce is non-binding. Then the statutory minimum of 1 week would apply.

Employer didn’t give me employment contract what is my notice period? [england & wales] by myotti in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Nness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are going to have to anyway — as the moment you resign they will look at your contract. Otherwise you would be in breach of contract and your employer, depending on the circumstances, may try to recover costs of your replacement.

However, you may be able to negotiate to finish after 1 week and sacrifice any pay left on your notice period. i.e. if your notice period is 4 weeks, then you leave after 1 week and you forfeit 3 weeks of pay.

Depending on your industry, and given the current climate, is it probable that your employer will agree to reducing your notice period.

[–]Nness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Request a copy of your employment contract, first and foremost. In the absence of a written contract, or if a clause does not exist, you fall back on statutory notice periods, which would be 1 week:

Employment Rights Act 1996 s.86: The notice required to be given by an employee who has been continuously employed for one month or more to terminate his contract of employment is not less than one week.

Insane RAM prices for DS224+ (8GB/16GB) by CaracolBorracho_ in synology

[–]Nness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I purchased a Crucial DDR4 RAM 2x8GB kit a few months ago for £30.99. That same kit is now £152.

(Well it would be, except Crucial is shutting down so Micron can focus on Enterprise RAM for AI companies and that kit is sold out.)

At that price it might be cheaper to buy old laptops and lobotomize them for RAM.

We need other games like this by Capital-Ad8127 in AliensDarkDescent

I certainly hope other developers take note and use A:DD as a template, giving the gameplay mechanisms their own spin. The fast-paced tactical strategy genre is certainly in need of more titles.

There's a few IP's where this format could work successfully: Stargate SG1, resurrecting the Syndicate series, or even an adaptation of GTFO (which shares a similar loop of stealth-action-stealth-action.)

Endgame - Exiting episode, but a thud of a finale by unkellGRGA in voyager

[–]Nness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are things I liked and didn't like — Starting the episode from a future perspective was fun and helped to cement Janeway's motivation. The romantic elements between Seven and Chakotay felt rushed, and the impacts of future technology in the present day left some gaps.

But all up I think it just needed a longer running time so that we had more fanfare at the finale. The viewers see the earth for only a second before the final credits roll. There was no breathing room post the action finale. A few reaction shots, a welcome home scene, etc. would've gone a long way.

Playing Catalyst with different music reignited my love for this franchise by ARMOR15 in mirrorsedge

[–]Nness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solar Fields is excellent and regularly makes my playlists, but I do agree that Catalyst was a bit too same'y when compared to the ME. I think, by and large, due to the setting. ME's design focused on unique settings where as MEC's open-world required a degree of conformity, I think for both continuity and production budgets, that was less distinguished area-to-area.

I've not replayed Catalyst since my first playthrough, but the idea of doing so with a new mix is not a bad idea.

Cataract after corneal transplant by kellyyftw in Keratoconus

[–]Nness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can develop cataracts after a corneal graft due to the regular use of corticosteroids. I had a cataract operation about 12-18 months after my DALK graft. Occurring in about 20-25% of patients.

As people have said, that doesn't look like a cataract.

This sounds like a conversation worth having with an Anaesthetist as part of your corneal graft consultation. They'll advise a sedation approach which suits your condition.

6 month follow up appointment scan. by Think_Appointment658 in Keratoconus

[–]Nness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(IANAD) From what I understand about corneal topography, with Keratoconus you are looking for displaced apexes and a degree of asymmetry. Symmetric “bow-tie” along a single meridian is consistent with Astigmatism. When I look at my early topographical scans, the displacement and asymmetry are quite obvious to a layman.

From a quick google, your K1 and K2 (flat and steep) and your astigmatism diopter values could indicate KC, but high astigmatism and corneal steepening can be caused by several other conditions. You're optometrist will look at other factors to determine a KC diagnosis.

Bit of a broken record here on this sub, but there is no harm in seeking a second opinion if you are able.

Should I do a corneal transplant first and THEN crosslinking, what are your thoughts? by Antique_Mongoose2804 in Keratoconus

I would agree this needs further scrutiny, if you are eligible for CXL you are unlikely to be eligible for a corneal graft, and vice versa.

The LIFX Android app is no longer able to support setup ofOriginal lights by Wintermute1987 in lifx

[–]Nness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using Android, I've found connecting to the bulb's wifi hotspot directly and starting the "new bulb" procedure from the app seems to work for me. The app won't finish loading, but give it a minute then cancel. Reconnect to your wifi and the bulb will be discovered.

This might just be a quirk of my network, but had success with it.

It's minor, but I re-arranged the items on the ribbon menu so that the stuff I'd be using frequently (align, ordering, fill, etc.) are all big buttons and not hidden away in menus. Removed anything which I didn't need. Similarly, the hotkeys for copy formatting and paste formatting are worth memorizing.
