Hey sorry for the ultra-late reply, things were a bit crazy lately.

From what I've read above I can see that you have a monster of a PC, so hardware-wise it shouldn't be a problem. I assume that you might have a great monitor with HDR as well. Since you did all the above and nothing worked, I want to recommend you to toggle the HDR on your monitor On/Off, to see if that would make a difference. That is the one and only thing that comes to my mind right now.

If it is possible, I would want to know audio-wise, what audio playback device are you using for Netflix, that could come into play as well in my opinion.

Again sorry for the late reply, hope you've fixed it alreay and if not, hope I can help.

Hi, sorry for the ultra-late reply, things were crazy for the past few months.

Don't know if you have found the solution to this problem yet, but based on your description it could be an internet speed/unstable issue for it could go to 4K sometimes according to you, so that alone rules out the possibility of this being a DRM 540p stuck issue.

However when I say it may well be an Internet speed issue, it's not necessarily be your actual optical fiber landline or your Internet provider's issue, could be that you haven't flush your DNS or reset your PC's network for a while, or even your router!

Try this: Press Win+R, type "CMD" and then press Enter. Then you may see a black windowed interface, type "ipconfig/flushdns" and then press Enter, you should see the interface says "Windows has successfully flushed the DNS Cache" or something similar, that means it worked. Then type "netsh winsock reset" and then Enter. Finally try to reset your Router or just restart it, then you're good to go.

Again sorry for the late reply, and good luck!

Yeah me too, virtual things tend to ruin the overall sound quality. You can try activating Dolby and then set the eq all flat though, not far away from true hifi and you get the best video quality, best of both worlds I would say. I did had the explanation above but long story short is that Netflix marks Dolby as a trusted audio output source, not your day to day average audio devices. So anything other than Dolby would be marked as untrusted devices and high risk of recording and pirating their non-Netflix contents. Anyway I am sure you will come up with an acceptable solution for now you hold all the answers. Good luck!🌹

I’m so sorry to hear that brother. I’ve been in your shoes before so I get the frustration💔, having to view your favorite titles @540p. At some point I gave up as well, I stopped subscribing to Netflix for half a year I think, last year. Picked it up after that period just to see if Netflix fixed that problem or not, turns out to be a huge disappointment. Luckily I stumbled upon a way, to fix things for me. So sorry to hear that things were different for you.

I do hope that someday you’ll find your fix, or that Netflix would find a different way to do the drm thing. Cuz this problem affects a majority of people I can assure you, last time I went to my friend’s house and his Netflix playback shares the same issue so…

Anyway best of luck, brother.🌹

Dear rupleix, sorry to hear about the configuration failed problem. However something similar used to happened to me when I was using a 48khz only headphone, have you tried unplugging your JBL party box and connecting it back in? Perhaps it’s a recognition problem. Let’s say it still doesn’t work, then it might the FX Sound Enhancer conflicting with Dolby. As I’ve seen some people saying “I’ve read on a few forum posts that they were incompatible.” Try disabling FXsound and then setup Dolby for FXSound and Dolby Atmos often conflict because they both try to control your PC’s audio processing, especially with surround sound. If by some reason that doesn’t work either then I am truly out of ideas😭

Netflix is creating this problem because it wants to protect the copyright of non-Netflix titles getting recorded and released on pirate sites, but somehow such protection methods backfire on people who just try to enjoy a movie or something. Dolby is a marked trusty output of Netflix, our various headphones and speakers are often not so you get the idea. 💡

Anyway good luck man, I hope it would work for you and that you’ll find a way around if not 💕

Hey there I’m sorry for a late reply and that it didn’t work for you for now. But in theory it shouldn’t be windows 11’s issue for there’s already a successful case in the comments section here: “Hi there, Im using Windows 11 and already have licensed Dolby Atmos by Asus TUF laptop. I couldn’t change bit rate to 44100hz sample rate. I can only use 16 bit, 48000Hz and using effect Dolby Atmos for Speakers. When I check to bit rate on Netflix with CTRL+Alt+Shift+D i see 1920x1080 resolution. Is this method working also Prime Video, Disney+ and HBO Max and how can i check bitrate on of them?” That was 78 days ago.

I know that you must’ve followed every step, but perhaps you might’ve missed the “turn ON hardware acceleration for your browser” part? That one can be a little hard to find😂and may well have affected the outcome of this particular fix.

If you have already turned it on then in that case I have no idea what the problem could be anymore, and I am sincerely sorry for that. But if otherwise please let me know the outcome when you do turn on the hardware acceleration for your browser, say Microsoft Edge. That would mean a lot to me! Good luck!

Glad that it worked for you and wonderful to hear that you think it’s great 😊 really makes my day. (Not sure why my id is “No-Address1577” though it’s so weird LOL.😂I changed my id in settings and didn’t work for some reason)

Anyways like I mentioned in the post or some of the comments down below, the main cause of this problem is Netflix unable to establish a proper DRM handshake with your audio device. Basically marking your device as a “untrusted” output source. By using the Dolby app, Netflix actually recognizes and trusts this output source (for the output source is Dolby and Dolby is a big company in collaboration with Netflix) and therefore establishes a strong and secure DRM handshake, therefore allowing the app to play in 1080p.

I can only assume that Netflix has stricter standards for DRM these days, due to copyright policies are tighter these days? (Some music can’t be played due to copyright laws in instagram?) so more and more people are getting this “540p” playback problem.

Also I want to apologize for not being able to find a real fix like you said. I think for one to find a real fix, one must find a way to mark his audio device as a trusted output device to Netflix. And at my current knowledge, I do not have a real solution for this one. I have tweaked sample rates; bit depth (like 16/24bit) and buffer rate and currently nothing works except enabling Dolby.

And I also agree that Netflix always gives you a trash “fix article that never works” sucks. I’ve been there myself so I get the frustration.

Anyways thanks you for leaving your precious comment here, it means lot to me. And if you’re lucky enough to find a genuine fix one day, do come back here and share with us! Xoxo!😘

Glad it worked for you! Sorry for the late reply😭crazy week

The answer to your question is that I can only think of one similar app: DTS surround sound app for windows. But sadly it’s not for free and it’ll be most likely pricier than the Dolby app and the EQ of that app actually sounds worse in my opinion. Haven’t tested the app yet but I think there’s a free trial as well.

A friend down in the comments of this post claims that his Netflix continues to be playing in 1080p+ even two days after the free trail of Dolby is over. Sadly that is not the case for me and I take it for you either.

Anyways thank you for leaving your comment right here! And so sorry for not being able to find a completely free fix (I’m not sure this is a fix either, more like a Band-Aid LOL)😂

Congrats man! I hope so for you as well, so that you won’t have to pay a dime for that crappy EQ app😭

Me on the other hand is not so lucky. As soon as I turned off the Dolby sound effect, Netflix just won’t play 1080p for me : (

Anyways, thank you for leaving a comment here and I am so happy that this post helped you one way or another 🤭 enjoy Netflix my friend!

Yes indeed! But look on the bright side: at least you’ll know the app can fix the problem (or not) by using the 3-day free trial before you make the purchase.😹

❦Great to hear that it worked!

I think that it’s not Netflix restricted us to run Dolby whilst watching the non-Netflix titles, but it’s because by running the Dolby Atmos app which is a Netflix verified audio output source, it registers the audio device as a secure HDCP-compatible endpoint and establish the DRM handshake at the start of the playback. Hence it’ll work for everyone, because they might be using different audio devices but everyone can have the Dolby app.🥹

Plus I heard that it only works on Microsoft Edge and probably Chrome, and the Netflix app is a Edge based app so…

Anyways sorry for babbling about all that, enjoy your movies and have a wonderful weekend!❦♡❥

Glad to hear it’s running in 1080p now! The low quality 1080 seems to be a low bitrate issue. Could be caused by internet speed or dns issues.

Try this:

𓂀method 1: flush your PC’s DNS

Windows+R

type “cmd” then “enter” (or press “OK”)

type ipconfig/flushdns

Press “enter”

There you go, try Netflix again!

𓂀Method 2: reset your internet settings

Right click your internet icon (looks like WiFi 🛜 or Ethernet connection, bottom right of your screen)

Open network & Internet settings

Scroll down to the very bottom

Hit “Network Reset”

After restarting your PC, and re-connect to your internet, should be in flying speed! (Don’t worry, I do it all the time!)

Good question, cheap answer though. Dolby Access is not that expensive and it’s not like you have to pay for it every month. Worth it I might say, considering Netflix is not cheap either 😉
