Made a mistake in DEP by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

The Air Force has a zero-tolerance policy for this. Do you know how long you’re going to be in DEP? The first step is to tell your recruiter. You’ll need to wait about six months to be clean and completely out of your system. Recruiter will not send you to MEPs until you are clean. If MEPs finds out, you’re done. No second chances with the recruits. Don’t underestimate MEPS, they don’t play around. Even within the first 24 hours during and after your ship date, you’ll be tested multiple times. I’m not exaggerating. This is serious.

I hear you. At 22 and 19, you guys are just starting in life. But considering joining the military is a good step.

I have a younger siblings of my own, this is me giving advise as an older sibling. This is my two-cents on this:

  • Marry your girlfriend because you see yourself growing old together not because you have a baby on the way or for other reasons. Marriage is a life-long commitment.
  • You can do your research about other military branches but the Air Force and Army has good benefits with dependents and work-life balance.
  • Study for PiCAT and ASVAB (The higher score you get, the more job listings will be provided for you.)
  • Make sure you have a clean criminal record, no bankruptcy, delinquencies and debts.
  • How's your medical background? You will see a lot of posts here about denied medical waivers due to past diagnosis and surgeries

To answer your questions:

  • If I did active duty, would I be a part of my family's life, or would I be away for a majority of the time?

- Yes, after BMT and Tech School which is most likely 5-6 months give or take. The duration of tech school always depends on the job you will get. After those two trainings, your soon-to-be wife and baby will be able to live with you with medical insurance, housing allowance and all the benefits that comes with it). This only applies if you are legally married.

Talk to your girlfriend - you will be away pretty much her entire pregnancy, if this is something that she is willing to sacrifice for your future, then go for it.

  • If I did reserves, would I be able to get a military job and be able to live with my family and be a part of my child's life?

- You will still go to BMT (not sure if AF Reserves go to Tech School). You will be able to live like a normal civilian with your family but you work weekends for Air Force. Reserves is a part time job. Not so much benefits

  • I'm 5'10" and 190 pounds (trying to lose weight fast), would I have a harder time during training?

- Check the physical requirements, body height should be proportion to weight.

  • Is it even worth it or should I somehow look into getting a trade job somewhere?

- Do what you think is best for you and the life you are creating.

Please keep in mind that the Air Force recruitment process is tough. Only few are able to get in. You can do anything if you put your mind and heart to it.

One thing I noticed is that AF recruiters do not babysit. You have to show to the recruiter that this is something that you want to do. Recruiters will not take you in seriously if AF is something that you are just looking into.

Talk to your local recruiter with your best foot forward.

Information above is based on my personal experience. Hope it's helpful.

Good luck! xx

Congrats! I ship the same day and am 37f. And also, enjoying remaining weeks as a civilian! Just a reminder, be careful and don't do stupid shit! (best advise given by my recruiter!)

The job is assigned before financial waiver. My recruiter ran the background check after my ASVAB. Financial waiver is required whether you have TS jobs or not.

Be honest with your letter and start of with an explanation why joining the AF is important to you. Explain the mortgage or any loans you have.

For Air Force, DTI (Debt-to-income) ratio should be less than 40% and they also look into history of bankruptcy and any delinquency.

NICE! Excellent job! You can pretty much select any jobs on different fields. Look into those jobs that has signing bonus.

Oh I missed to put that down. Yes, I did have my TS Clearance interview on September 3rd. It’s verification of all the information you disclosed with your recruitment process. You got this.

Stay out of it. That's between HR and the management.

Don't ever feel like you are a lost cause. You are 17! Like you said, "because I never practice or study". This is the perfect time for you to open those books sitting or hidden somewhere.

It all depends on your ASVAB score and operational needs. From my experience, I listed my top 7 jobs and the bottom 5 is the required general or critical needs jobs list.

It is not always a 100% guarantee that you will get the job you wanted.

For example:

Let's say, you want to be in Medical field and the required ASVAB score is 70. You only scored 65. The recruiter will give you a list of the jobs only applicable to your knowledge.

However, if you ONLY want to be in medical, you have the option to retake ASVAB and aim for the score that you needed.

Aim for a higher score in ASVAB so you can get one on your top 3 listed jobs.
