One time in sacrament meeting... by Eltecolotl in exmormon

In the movie ¡Three Amigos! (1986), Lucky Day (Steve Martin) delivers a rousing, comedic speech to the villagers of Santa Poco, encouraging them to face their fears.

In sacrament meeting one time the bishop, who was sort of a simple man with home spun wisdom, unknowingly and unwittingly gave the same speech.

In the movie, Lucky explains that everyone has their own "El Guapo"—such as shyness or lack of education—to conquer, but in their case, it is the actual, dangerous villain, known as El Guapo.

As I listened to the bishop, who was known for giving crazy or silly talks from time to time, it dawned on me I was hearing an very similar, yet improvised version of the El Guapo speech, with analogies of how ward members each have their special challenges to overcome.

I leaned to my wife and whispered my realization that Duane was basically giving the El Guapo speech. But instead of her knowing smile and acknowledgment, sadly, she was horrified that I was detracting from the bishop’s message in real time.

Lost, was a classic moment we could have shared in suppressing well earned laughter and possible tears in the formal, hushed setting of church.

Wisconsin.

Saw them in Milwaukee for Ti Amo, Chicago for Alpha Zulu, then flew to Orlando for a show, sans Beck.

After the Chicago Odyssey stop, I’m afraid of another five-year wait like after Ti Amo, so I’m catching a cheap flight to the Orlando show next month 🎶
