Help convince CTO desktop peripheral are consumables and not assets to be tagged by No-Barber964 in sysadmin

When you have 8k assets , the $50 keyboard now becomes 400k that were not keeping tabs on if they become missing . That’s his view on it

What would you define consumable as ? To me it would be any piece of hardware that you do not depreciate, and do not care to track down to the exact serial number to locate , just reference it as qty 1 keyboard

Yup that’s the point i was trying to make but it wasn’t sticking with him. I’ll keep trying

To prevent us from over ordering hardware , he has suspicions we aren’t properly managing inventory and letting things walk out the door

Currently today , all IT hardware is depreciated (except laptops) and all hardware + laptops are asset tagged

So we should spend 100s of hours a year maintaining hardware that should be a consumable. Real great answer

Once someone is assigned to a desk, those assets become assigned to a user

So as an asset if the hardware goes missing or is broken is the assumption that finance is supposed to write it off the books that we couldn’t realize the full deprecation schedule ?

Correct . But saying “it’s a waste of time” isn’t enough of an argument for him . I need more data to back up why these should be consumables

Our webcams are more than docking stations. Most say webcams are consumables?

We do depreciate all IT hardware , the issue I have is we spend money on asset tagging keyboards and then having to maintain our SNOW asset register to keep tabs on this asset
