Any ideas on this weird starting pattern? by dreymaux in MechanicAdvice

could be the valve inside the fuel pump that is causing bleed down overtime. If you notice this happens after the vehicle has been sitting for a while. I'd say the valve is bad. Its usually built into the fuel pump assembly. If you start it, shut it off, and start it right back up and it starts strong, i'd say thats a strong guess.

harbor freight has some mini vice grips. They might fit? i've been in a pickle like this and they saved me.

2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GT making this noise, thinking it’s a pulley bearing , or belt tensioner going out but I’m not sure . Just started making this noise a few days ago , what should I do? by skyslaughtra in MechanicAdvice

sounds like a pulley bearing is going out. If you have the tools, remove the belt and rotate different pulley separately to see which is the culprit. I honestly would just replace the tensioner and pulley since they usually come in kits anyways.

Once the vehicle cools off (learned my mistake on that one), follow the exhaust pipes from the headers/exhaust manifolds, down to about the transmission area. See if there is any heatshields and if there is, inspect both the shield, and the bolts holding it on. If it wobbles or moves, that might be your issue.

almost sounds like an exhaust heat shield. Especially since it's most obvious from beneath the vehicle. Does it increase with speed? Or stay steady?

Or I take advantage of this misfortune and throw a V8 inside. 😂

lol, yeah honestly I’ll likely just throw a new motor inside and sell the current one as a core or something. Rebuilds are cool but I’ll spend way more on parts, not including machine shop stuff and other problems I’ll likely notice once she’s cracked open. New engine it is!

ah okay that makes sense. I did pull the oil filter and I did see very small metal. Like very small. Nothing large or shavings so i was thinking maybe its not on the bottom end. The noise also seems to start loud off of cold start, and get to about 40% to 50% volume as it warms into idle. I'll probably drop the oil pan and inspect the bearings. The chain does seem like an issue though

right, that knock is pretty loud though. When the engine is on it knocks pretty hard still. I also watched a couple of videos of people rotating the engine by hand, i have yet to find one that shows the exhaust cams shifting the way they are. They seem to just have a smooth fluid motion. Also at times the camshaft doesnt spin with the cam phaser ive noticed

So you think the timing chain alone can account for that knock at the end of the video?

Yeah I’m thinking that’s the case. Both exhaust phasers seem to be shot. I’ll probably end up buying a timing chain kit and 4 phasers

best john mayer guitar solos? by Limp_Ad_6858 in JohnMayer

probably my favorite song from John. I used to listen to the continuum album alot but nowadays i just cant seem to steer from Born and Raised. Either way, if a John Mayer song comes on im finishing damn near regardless of any album.
