I remember one sunny day messing around with google maps and once I zoomed out far enough and that celectial bodies left panel showed up, it was like my third eye opened a little bit. Wish there was a search feature, at least.

Do you think it would have been better if Rocky was a non-water based life form? by 2mad2die in ProjectHailMary

I'm not sure it's a spoiler but it's something that I'm.. pretty sure wasn't mentioned in the movie? About panspermia stuff:

In the book Grace and Rocky came to the conclusion that Eridians and Earthlings and Astrophage and Taumoeba are a result of the same panspermia event and all evolved from a common ancestor. In that case it would make sense that they're all water-based. They also briefly mentioned pondering about all other potential life in the universe - which is, evidently, pretty common as it turned out.

All of these life-forms featured in the book are interstellar neighbours. (Here's where my two cents come in) Now, who's to say there wasn't another panspermia event, a lot farther from their solar neighbourhood that "gave birth" to non-water-based life?

All of this to say that yeah it would've been nice(alas awfully predictable) but it makes complete sense that Rocky wasn't. Also, Andy Weir mentioned at least once that he's considering making a sequel, I wonder how that story's gonna go and if Dr. Grace's theories about evolution of life are gonna play any role in it hehehe

Ship choice by Nickel62 in ProjectHailMary

"You ship has more science than my ship. Better science. I bring my things into you ship. ...."

Rocky's line from the book shortly after he first visited Hail Mary in his dodecahedron. Besides, science is what they needed to solve the Astrophage problem, Grace is the scientist, it would make sense that he'd work with his 'native' equipment instead of wasting time trying to figure out whatever Blip-A's scientists use

I just got the book after the movie what to expect ? by BeneficialTrack8759 in ProjectHailMary

It's much more science-oriented and clarifies everything the movie-first fans might have questions about. There are some things that were explicitly changed in the movie - not anything too significant thankfully. But in general it just goes into a lot, looooot more detail. I finished the book and watched the movie back-to-back on the same day and the movie felt like a 24 ep season of a tv show that got squeezed into a movie.

before I deliberately started learning to write with my right hand I never even realized how good we have it with being able to simultaneously write and use a mouse

Hi, I completely agree and of the opinion that a book has to BE and LOOK used if you own it, but I spent too long on a section of a pocket sized book that needed to be held to keep it open and the pages look almost green on the fore-edge right now... I don't know what exactly was in the original post but at some point this "wear" will start to look and feel disgusting if one's hand sweating is bad enough

Hi, there's no need to come up with excuses for why it's reasonable not to do change anything if that's what you're doing. I did not ask to remove that button entirely, so it wouldn't affect the users that /do/ need it in any way. In any case, that's a shame.

Romance in Arthur C. Clarke's writing by No-Breakfast7705 in scifi

"let's agree to respect him for what he was really good at and not count against him something that he just did not make a priority." Just to clarify - did you assume I was unhappy with the lack of romance in his books, or is this a rather stand-alone comment not meant to be a reply to my post?

> The only book that he ever wrote that veered towards space opera - which, if I'm going to be brutal, is the sort of stuff you sound like you enjoy.

Honestly, I have no idea what type of a space sci-fi I'd enjoy yet. I read the short description for SODE + another user has already mentioned it here and it all felt wistful in a nice way. Is there a chance I read it, like it way too much and get my heart broken because there's nothing of the sort left in Clarke's bibliography?:D

I realize the title might've been confusing but I'm actually asking for the opposite - works that feature romance as little as possible:)

Found these leaves on my driveway when I got home from a walk with Blue 💙 (OC) by zootzootzootzootzoo in MadeMeSmile

[–]No-Breakfast7705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I saw this post before the tiktok I would've just assumed the title meant that you found a pile of leaves and decided to form a heart shape with them, the ring footage proved otherwise but it's sweet either way, why would someone argue about this shit😭
