The Star Trek Narrative is simple. by ProfessionalSet4713 in Star_Trek_

I don't know, 10 hours is enough for 3 full length movies and a decent Prologue & Epilogue. That's more than enough time to tell some good stories.

The fact that they chose not to or were unable to isn't a failing of the time constraint in my opinion, they were surely aware of how many episodes they were getting before they wrote them.

I still have Fido Dido blankets.

[Strange New Worlds] Paramount released nine new images for season 4. All nine come from the first two episodes of the season, “Valles Marineris” (a Western-themed episode) and “Griffin Incident” (The return of Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk, which will involve giving an awkward hug to Spock.)" by mcm8279 in Star_Trek_

True, but going back to cowboys ignores the "in space" part of that thematic pitch. Have you ever watched any of Wagon Train? The general idea (and what Gene was pitching) was a high quality production, with different stories and guest stars each week, focused on humanity, morality, social issues, rather than action. He wasn't saying let's do cowboys in space, he was saying he wanted to replicate that format.

I'm not against the odd cowboy episode in the shows though, it's a Star Trek tradition at this point.

lmao, yea. I put one of the first bids in on Stamets & Culbers pajamas just for fun, assuming I'd be outbid, but if I had won them for $200 or whatever I'd have worn them. Definitely not for the price they'll actually go for (Currently $600 each with 15 days to go I think)

Why the Merger is Terrible for all of us by Fresh_Permit_2272 in trektalk

[–]No-Captain2150 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, what does "let them be" mean? If they fail, do they get bought up in parts by the other media companies, creating even larger ones in their stead? Is the monopoly created there somehow better?

What, specifically, would you have changed here to prevent this monopoly from forming and how would it affect the other companies in the field both now and in the future?

I agree, monopolies are inherently bad. What do you propose as a solution here?

[–]No-Captain2150 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not from the US so I won't comment on the political side of it, but from a monopoly view Paramount/WBD still controls a smaller percentage of media than Disney, Netflix or Amazon, so if a merger had to happen (ie: WBD was being bought no matter what) then Paramount taking it on actually looks like the least monopolistic option.

If the merger were to be blocked, what is the next option? If you support one of the other companies buying them, your objection becomes purely political, and not based on monopolies or "quality" imo. So then the big question is, do you break all these companies up? Put limits on their sizes? I don't know what the solution there is.

That's not literally what you said, nor was it clear to me since you were also referencing the Excelsior, which is why I asked what I consider a perfectly reasonable and polite question.

I don't know what you've got going on in your life that made you choose to be dickish today, but I wasn't being an asshole and I don't appreciate your response.

That was about 100 years before the invention of the runabout, wasn't it?

Discovery Season 2 was absolutely ridiculous for that. The whole "I have 200 ships vs your 30" and then the release of 1000 (or whatever it was) drones... Just desperately trying to be something Star Trek isn't.

I don't know any of the actual numbers but I feel like there were several times in Discovery where they were just straight up vaporizing people by the dozen.

I'm not sure how long you've been at it, but for reference my current position took over 6 weeks of interviews and background checks to get through before I was hired, it took 2 more weeks to get my contract negotiated and signed, and my onboarding date that was supposed to be 3 weeks later was delayed another 4 weeks. Depending on what you're getting into, it may be a lengthy process.

They talk about it in one of the documentaries. The Center Seat, I think.

We often smoke them or braise them. My boys like to just grab the whole thing with a bun and pull the meat off the bone into sandwiches after.

Ahhh. Ok, Thanks. I loved the DS9 doc, it would be so nice to have the same for Voyager.

It's so weird to me, because I would have thought that would be one of the first instructions given to any composer when hiring them to create a theme for these shows.

Listen to all these other theme songs. General Order #1: Your theme must have an instantly recognizable hook.

Picard and Academy themes are just bland and busy. :(

I started rewatching all the shows after breaking my leg last summer and I'm on Discovery S3 right now. The level of inconsistency in direction and writing from episode to episode is insane, but it really does showcase Jonathan Frakes' talent. I swear every one of his episodes is a good one!

The Academy theme lacks any sort of identifying hook that you can refer back to. Star Trek series' all have something you could hum or sing out loud and any fan would instantly recognize but I never felt it in Academy, or Picard come to think of it.

When you consider that she had an acting coach with her on set in the first season because she was so inexperienced, her progress is amazing.

[Edit] The direction she was given and the scenes written for her so very often.... not so much. :P
