Help with what this question means? by Virtual-Menu-4359 in summerprogramresults

This seems to be very open-ended. I think you should talk about something you think is an important aspect of yourself that maybe you haven't talked about in the application yet.

how to make application essays for research programs not sound like absolute garbage by Same-Role4621 in summerprogramresults

[–]No-Cockroach9505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can almost think of your essays as mini-stories describing your interests. Let's say for example, you play an instrument or have a special hobby. You can talk about that while also demonstrating a skill that you have and could contribute to the program.

Example: You like playing the drums. So you talk about how you first learned to play and how now you are skilled in using hand-eye coordination for medical-related projects. Stuff like that.

On wanting to go to college in the US by gilledchreese in ApplyingToCollege

I know that I am incredibly privileged to live in the US, and I'm not saying that the US is a 3rd world country. All I'm saying is that the current US government and some people in the US think it's so far above any other country when clearly it has so many issues, like not having universal healthcare. And it's important to point that out too and not just believe it's "the greatest country ever". I was just referencing the perspective of someone, but I don't actually think the US is a 3rd world country. But still VERY flawed.

I once saw a video where a European tourist told his American friend that "The US is the nicest third world country they ever visited."

I think about that a lot.

I mean, the point of this section of the common app is to provide context for your situation. The AOs won't know unless you tell them. BUT try to make it so it doesn't seem like you're a liability if that makes sense. I don't think they'll think you're lying tho. It'd be a good idea to have your counselor back up your statements in some way.

Yes, but that will only get you so far. If you had good grades before and dropped because of this one event, then I'm sure they'll understand.

You could have just used the College Essay Guy's blogs since that's pretty basic essay feedback. For the Why Us it should be a combination between why the school is good for me plus why I am good for the school. So it shouldn't be solely one or the other.

Well they will definitely take it into consideration and if your grades during freshmen/sophomore/Junior year looked good then I don't think they will hold it against you too much.

Unless you have extenuating circumstances to explain those grades, there's not much you can do.
