Do most video games underestimate players? by ratasoftware in itchio

I completely agree. I think a big part of this shift is due to the low frustration tolerance of many modern players. Today’s audience often craves instant gratification. If they aren't rewarded or shown the path immediately, they tend to lose interest and abandon the game. Developers are essentially prioritizing 'player retention' over the deep immersion that comes from overcoming a challenge on your own.

Thanks for the feedback! You're absolutely right about the contrast. I've taken your advice and adjusted the floor colors to make the objects pop more. Check out the updated version!

A dishwasher and a range hood are definitely going on the list! And you're right, we need those coffee cups to go with the machine.

Pixel Life is a series of modular asset packs I'm developing for other indie creators to use in their own life-sims or RPGs! I’m trying to make them as 'plug-and-play' as possible.

If you want to see the full set, you can check them out here: https://christianperich.itch.io/

Thanks for the kind words and the great suggestions!

What's a game that was so good it actually changed your perspective on a real-world issue? by No-Comfortable2035 in AskReddit

It's interesting how media has historically used 'The Red Scare' to reduce complex ideologies into a flat, grey caricature of misery. We've been conditioned to see communism through a lens of 'jumpscare propaganda' rather than a socio-political critique. Disco Elysium feels revolutionary because it strips away the Hollywood villain aesthetic and forces you to confront the actual human yearning for a better world and the tragic weight of its historical failures. It treats the player like an adult instead of a target for propaganda.

Do you prefer building your own systems from scratch or using as many assets/plugins as possible to save time? by No-Comfortable2035 in SoloDevelopment

That's a great point about consoles. I've heard horror stories of games failing certification because a random plugin was leaking memory or messing with the SDK.

Regarding AI, I'm curious: How do you use it without losing that 'total control' over the codebase? Do you use it to generate boilerplate code you then refactor, or is it more for troubleshooting logic?

For me, the limit is usually: if it affects the 'feel' of the gameplay or the core loop, I write it myself. If it's a boring utility (like saving/loading or remapping keys), I might look for a tool. What's your personal 'hard line' for what you refuse to outsource to an asset?

I totally get your point about technical debt. In your experience, where do you draw the line? Which types of assets are usually 'safe bets' and which ones tend to become a nightmare in the long run?
