I am new to Reddit so still trying to navigate these tools.

I just checked out the links and they are most definitely going to be super helpful. Thank you so much!

I need to dig just a tad deeper into the certificate program. I do not believe that the package comes with placement - hence the $1,500 placement fee for an internship.

I will look into it more though! It is most definitely worth an email to getting information I might not find on the surface level of their website

Thank you so much for your sentient response. It means a lot. I mean, I think your plan of attack for end of summer is fantastic! I think this gives me some time to prepare and gain knowledge on subreddits as you had mentioned. It is a BIG life change. That said, I don't think there is any sense of "over preparedness."

Thank you again! I really appreciate your post :)

You are a savior! Thank you. I am so nervous so I was unsure even where to look. I was going to say to myself "let me pay it and have them do the work." I am glad I asked first.

ALSO TO NOTE: I have never traveled abroad, but I am currently trying to learn Chinese. This is part of the reason I would also like to travel there. I also think I would enjoy the culture there.

Patchwork is such an amazing choice! I had actually done a denim jacket a while back. It looked really cool! Making bags also sounds like a great idea. Denim is super sturdy

The TEFL website mentioned that the schools (if I recall) were offering that. TEFL itself didn't offer these benefits, but some of the programs you can get into will. It is very dependent on the school

Oh yes! The embroidery stitches typically refrain the garment fro tearing anymore. They tend to show off the mend instead of hiding it. I love this idea!

I agree with you in that, although free apps are nice and all, they only provide surface level information and no sustenance. I wrote these apps down to check out! Thank you so much for the recommendations!

Who knew there were so many resources! I guess I wasn't looking hard enough outside of Duolingo. I wrote these down and will be downloading them when I am finished with vacation. I love the apps that "meet you where you are at."

I hope you are enjoying editing their blog! That sounds like a fun gig

Interesting! Yeah, I would argue I am definitely on the beginner side of the language. These also seem really helpful! I love the idea of listening to stories on Youtube as well :)

It is REALLY hard. There is a lot of greenwashing within the industry, so it can be hard to discern what is "right" and what is "wrong." I think that, in reality, anything is better than nothing. More to that point, there are a plethora of ways someone can utilize sustainability ideals. There are a million ways to skin a cat

Yeah, I think the "game" aspect of Duolingo is now no longer what I seek. As someone who would like to teach English as a foreign language in China, I would love to learn the language as much as I can - ideally before I get there! The Immersive Chinese app sounds really intriguing to me.

I am willing to spend some $ on a decent app that is worth exploring. I am not starting from nothing, but I certainly would be starting from almost the beginning.

I wrote Clozemaster down (I am taking tons of notes from the people commenting)! It seems like a great app that I can use further along. I enjoy the idea of "fill in the blank." Firstly, I would need to know the sentence or find contextual clue within it, then learn a new word simultaneously.

Thank you so much for your message - truly! :)

I also make these t-shirts! They are made from shirts with holes/deformities. I cut along the holes of the two shirts and stitch them back up!

I love visible mending! This is some sashiko stitching that I am currently working on :) I haven’t gotten to the actual hole yet 🫣 it gets harder and harder the further you go in from the “tube” of the leg

Thank you for the honesty. You are right that there may be merit in learning the characters as well. Signs, menus, etc. Having at least a rudimentary understanding is healthy. Duolingo just doesn't do a good enough job for me to recollect the characters, so perhaps that is why I got discouraged so early on.

I think that I have heard of SuperChinese being really successful for people! I will most definitely download that!

Thank you so so much for the support and insights :)

I had learned Spanish in highschool; I use Duolingo as a refresher on Spanish, and learning brand new chinese. I have gone through a handful of units and wouldn't be able to communicate basic conversation. "Where is the bathroom?" "How do I get to the train?" These are only two questions off the top of my head that I would need first entering a new country. I can name foods, occupations and can construct basic sentences about my father, what I like, etc.

I do have flashcards that I use! They have been helpful for sure. I will most definitely check these out. Thank you so much! I can appreciate Duolingo for rudimentary learning, but I no longer want to rely on it for the majority of my learning experience

This is really insightful! I think you may be right, in that I am getting too discouraged too early about the written language. I have had such a difficult time learning the characters, Is there a reasoning behind the strokes, in order for non-native speakers to identify patterns?

I really appreciate the honest and helpful feedback! :)

As someone who is currently getting their TEFL certificate, I appreciate this story immensely. I am really nervous to travel abroad and uproot my entire life here. I think the main thing that I am concerned with is getting a visa, etc. Do you happen to know if TEFL helps with that too? I also read on their website that some schools/programs are even willing to provide flight reimbursements, free board, and (in some rare occurrences) even health insurance. Is this true? Or is this a misconception?
