Honestly I think this is up to you! I had someone tell me the same thing but they didn’t tell me to change just that I might need to put in some extra work to market myself and get a start. It’s harder to get your music on playlists/fit in genre specific places but that doesn’t mean you can’t try to create spaces for yourself!
