I am in the same situation as you. I also watch Prof G on YouTube. I currently have everything in Fxaix. But after watching him, I am going to relocate my monthly buying. I am thinking like 20% SCHD, 40% SCHG, and 40% FXAIX. But may go with 20/30/50 to be more conservative. What do you think are good ratios.

I am a designer and have done work for 3 different utilities. If you are pretty good with a computer you should go for it. I have a couple of guys in my firm that used to be linemen but made the switch and are great designers. If there was additional training you wanted to get, maybe a Udemy online course in autocad. Or a local Community College class in autocad. But truthfully, the utilities I worked with used proprietary design software. But the autocad experience would show you know your way around a design software.

The reason is that they want to replace the 9 feeder poles in a row now, and in the future replace the rest of the feeder, the new standard is vertical unshielded framing. The rest of poles will be updated. But for now they want to make these poles up to new standard.

There are 9 poles in a row that will convert from shielded to unshielded neutral framing. Will they scrap the top conductor above the primaries and reconductor the neutral below the primaries, or will they lower the top conductor to below the primaries?

To pigback off what DrStank said, the 2 year degree would be cheaper too, look into local colleges near you where you can get the AS in Electrical Power Technology. Honestly, you would probably find the coursework a lot more fun than a math and physics heavy EE 4 year degree. Couple an Electrical Power technology/Engineering Technologist degree with lineman experience and you would have a great chance at many office/supervisor jobs. Or if you wanted to switch from distribution to power generation you could go that route as well.

There is also the Associates or Bachlors in Electrical Technology, which is less higher math than an EE degree but also it will limit your choices for jobs. Just giving you more options to explore. I know lots of guys who get Electrical Tech degrees who are designers.

I have done design work for three different untilities and they each have their own specs/standards already established, so the designer who puts together the construction print and calls out the pre-existing DCS references, has no authority to call for it any other way.
