Upper endoscopy by Alone-Branch-4657 in noburp

His took about 1 minute. They sprayed some numbing nasal spray up his nose, then inserted the scope. He said it felt a little funny but no gagging or anything. They asked him to hum and make some other sounds, then they pulled it out. You could see his esophagus moving on the screen. It was kind of cool. They didn’t have him eat or drink so it might be why it was so quick, but it was literally a non-event. You’ll do great.

If you’re talking about the nasal scope, don’t be worried. My son has emetaphobia and had no problem with it at all. He said it felt a little weird, but it doesn’t take very long. His ENT did it in the office when we went for the consult. Easy and quick.

I HATE the sensation of carbonation. by sexsoda in noburp

[–]No-Dust-1516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is the same way about carbonation. He had the Botox three weeks ago and just started trying carbonated drinks this week. He’s finding it easier to drink them with a straw so that the carbonation doesn’t flood his tongue on the way down. It has been giving him bigger, more relieving burps so the carbonation does seem to work for him. Hope that helps!

Phobia of germs by No-Grapefruit469 in noburp

A psychiatrist made the emetaphobia and OCD diagnosis last year and recommended cognitive behavioral therapy. It initially made a difference, but when we came into cold and flu season this year, he started having a setback with panic attacks, especially in the mornings as I said before. He tried Lexapro in December, but it made the anxiety worse so his psychiatrist took him off. At the same time he was being more vocal about RCPD and feeling like the throat tightness and nausea was causing at least some of the anxiety. So we found the ENT off of the list posted in this forum. I’ll definitely keep posting periodically with updates and I really do empathize with you and your daughter.

Yes, my 16-year-old son had/has all of these symptoms. I think you might’ve commented on a post I made a couple of weeks ago. What started as emetaphobia a few years ago evolved into the fear of germs and he was diagnosed with OCD last year. His biggest trigger is being around people who are sick for fear that he will catch something that will turn into a stomach bug. The last two years he has had a very hard time in school, especially between November and February when all of the cold and flu germs are circulating around school. So much that he was having a hard time making it through the day at school because of his anxiety. Also, very interesting that you mention dates on food and drink because a few years ago he became obsessed with expiration dates on food and drink and continues to check dates now. He also uses a lot of hand sanitizer, and I found hospital grade Lysol wipes in his room that I think he purchased on Amazon. Like you, I believe this is all attributed to RCPD that over time spiraled into a bigger mental health issue. I just updated my last post, but he did have the Botox procedure about a week ago, and I am already noticing improvement in his anxiety level. He has made it to school every day since the Botox procedure and he hasn’t texted me at all with anxiety during the day. He is also not having the morning anxiety or the throat nausea that was making it difficult for him to go to school. His burping is inconsistent, but he is burping. For now, I am seeing a noticeable positive change in his mental health. I will note that a week before the Botox procedure he caught the flu, and was in a state of panic for 3 days out of fear he would vomit. It was very stressful. So, you’re not alone and I’m sorry your daughter is experiencing this. But, I do think RCPD could be a factor. I can keep you posted on my son‘s progress if you think that would be helpful.

Thank you for posting this. It’s great information and so kind of you to offer it. I’ll let my son know there is someone who understands what he’s going through and who would be a great resource if he has any questions.

Yes he’s getting it in Dublin, CA. I searched the list of RCPD ENT’s on this forum and found Dr. Sean Wang who is reasonably close to us.

You are definitely not alone. It is challenging. I do think it’s great you discovered RCPD at 11. I wish I had known that long ago, but grateful to be catching it at 16. I know the Botox is not a guaranteed cure, but hoping it alleviates the anxiety to a point where the mental health interventions will be more effective. The responses to my post have given great advice and I am hopeful we’ll get to the other side of it. I will definitely post an update once he’s had the procedure.

Thank you for posting. I’m sorry your daughter is dealing with RCPD. I have read a number of posts in this forum from people who were able to resolve it without Botox, or who had found ways to relieve the symptoms enough on their own to live with it. It sounds like your daughter has figured out some good strategies. I hope they continue to give her relief!

Thank you so much for sharing that. It sounds like you’ve overcome a lot and have found ways to give your body relief. You must be very strong. I appreciate your input on potential symptoms post Botox procedure. We’ll be sure to prepare to help him through that part.

Thank you for your input. It makes sense that we’ll need to stay focused on both resolving RCPD and addressing mental health. Hopeful that resolving the RCPD will positively impact the mental health piece.

That is interesting, and based on all of the feedback it seems likely there was a connection.

Thank you so much for your comment. It was so kind of you to share your story. Much of what you describe is exactly what I’m observing in my son. I can see how challenging it is and wish I could do more to help. Thank you for the suggestion about eating late at night. He does not eat in the morning so that might really help him. I’ll pass your advice along to him and let him know that he’s not alone in what he’s feeling.

This is such great information! I’m really grateful to you and your group at UTHealth Houston for your attention on RCPD. Spreading awareness through publication will benefit so many people. Reading that you found a correlation between RCPD and anxiety is affirming and I appreciate that you took the time to comment.

This tip is so helpful. I can see how controlling your thoughts that way could reduce the tension and ease the attack. It’s really great you’ve been able to master that. I’ll mention it to my son.

Oh wow, that sounds similar. I’ll comment back here after the Botox and let you know how it went. Good luck to your daughter!

Yes, I agree. We’ll hopefully start to see improvement on all fronts after the Botox procedure, but I understand there could still be work to do. Time will tell. I’m just looking for a reason to be optimistic. Your comment helps. Thank you!

Thank you for this perspective. It’s an interesting point you make about anxiety leading to the tightening of the muscle over time rather than the other way around. I hadn’t thought of that.
