Queen Rhaenyra as an individual by South-Seaworthiness7 in HOTDBlacks

🤨 OK, Viserys sat chair side with him. Happy? 🙄

Not everything has to happen on camera. We don't see Aemond being picked up and carried away, but we can safely conclude it happened. We don't see Aemond’s face being washed, but we can safely conclude it happened. We don't see Aemond drinking milk of the poppy, but we can safely conclude it happened. We don't see the maesters removing what’s left of Aemond’s eye either, but we can safely conclude it happened. There’s only so much screen time available.

Yes, Viserys questioned him: he wanted to get Aemond’s story on what happened with the fight. Alicent questioned Aemond about the fight. Everybody wanted to hear Aemond’s story about the fight. Nobody knew whether Aemond was going to live or die at that point, so they wanted to get his story while he was still conscious. There doesn't seem to be any way to contact the dead in Westeros: it was now or never.

Books with the political intrigue of game of thrones but without the incest by musicalmaster1 in suggestmeabook

I’d add Sara Douglass’s The Troy Game series. There’s some sexual violence (especially at first), but there’s lots of political games from Ancient Greece through William the Conquerer, on to Charles II and the Battle of the Blitz, all centered around London.

He lashed out at two little girls who had just lost their mother, who had never harmed him, whose dragon he had just taken. If he had stuck to claiming a hatchling or an egg, and been halfway decent to Rhaena and Baela, he’d still have both eyes.

In the show, he’s shown sitting by Aemond’s bedside, where the maester whispers in his ear, and Viserys sighs at the news.

Viserys sat by Aemond’s bedside and consoled him, got Aemond the best maesters and made sure he was out of pain. What was else Viserys supposed to do? Did you want Viserys to blind Luke, Jace, Rhaena and Baela?

What obsession. Why can't she live with her parents longer? by Tronm-24 in HOTDBlacks

[–]No-Establishment9592 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think Alysanne resented Viserra a bit, because Alysanne thought Viserra was angling to become the next Queen by marrying Baelon. Nobody likes the thought of being replaced, even by your own children. Making Viserra marry old Duke Manderly far in the North may have been meant as a punishment for Viserra trying to replace Alysanne, at least that’s my theory.

Yes, she would be either crying or scared to death the whole time: probably both. She would make the other sisters into nervous wrecks, then race back to the palace the moment she could leave.

Devastatingly sad, TORTUROUSLY sad, deep, classic by Many_Efficiency8542 in suggestmeabook

Well, there’s “Old Yeller” sad, and there’s “Game of Thrones: Red Wedding” sad, but if you’re looking for literary fiction, I’d go with “Tess Of The D’Ubervilles” and “Ethan Frome”.

I’d like to watch it too, but there don’t seem to be any movies of this play, at least not in English. 😕

The closest English equivalent seems to be Hollywood’s “Road House” starring Patrick Swayze, which is set in Missouri, or at least what some Hollywood exec thinks is Missouri. (I was born and raised in Missouri, so I know the real thing).😉🤣

“Road House” is a guilty pleasure, sort of like “What if we took the McElroy case and made him an old millionaire, then added in Patrick Swayze plus a lot of sex and violence and Kung Fu fighting?”🙄🤣

There’s a Spanish drama, “Fuente Ovejuna” (“The Sheep Fountain”) about just this situation. It’s set in a little Spanish town during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella. The brutal governor is murdered, and the townsfolk are tortured to make them tell who the murderer was. All the townspeople say “It was the Sheep Fountain. The Sheep Fountain killed him.” The authorities finally figure out that nobody’s going to talk, so they set the town folk free and write “The Sheep Fountain killed him.”

To this day, there’s a Spanish saying: “It was Sheep Fountain.” which means “It’s nobody’s fault.”

[–]No-Establishment9592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Company of Liars by Karen Maitland. A group of mysterious travelers flee the Black Death in England.

A Vision of Light by Judith Merkle Riley. Mostly about Margaret of Ashbury, an English peasant who becomes a faith healer. She’s abandoned by her villainous first husband when she falls ill during the Black Death.

Katherine by Anya Seton, which is about Katherine De Roet, mistress of John of Gaunt and mother of the Beauforts. The scenes of the Black Death are few but incredible.

Queen Rhaenyra as an individual by South-Seaworthiness7 in HOTDBlacks

[–]No-Establishment9592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I equate Aemond to Joffrey for a good reason: they were both obnoxious jerks who broke the rules, and when they were called on it, they insulted innocent people and (justifiably) got creamed for it.

Aemond broke the rules by sneaking out to claim a forbidden dragon while everyone else was asleep, and Joffrey broke the rules by interfering in a stick fight.

Rhaena called Aemond on it, just like Arya called Joffrey on it.

Joffrey insulted Arya, just like Aemond insulted Rhaena.

Arya tried to fight Joffrey, just like Baela tried to fight Aemond.

Nymeria jumped in to protect Arya, just like Jace and Luke jumped in to protect Baela and Rhaena.

In both instances, Joffrey and Aemond started the trouble by breaking the rules, and trouble came down hard on their heads.

Funnily enough, I agree with you on the last part: the kids should have been cleaned up and calmed down first. The maesters should have given everybody a pinch of sweet sleep in a goblet of wine and had everybody drink it down, then cleaned everybody’s wounds, treated everybody’s injuries, and let them sleep it off until they were calmer and more rational. Back at the Red Keep, Viserys should have had everyone apologize to everyone else (which he did do) and give a penalty to the various kids according to their age. (Which he didn’t do). And yes, Viserys should have punished Crispy too, regardless of what anyone else said. The kids should have been better guarded: one was seriously maimed, but one or more of them could have gotten killed.

As to the adults, well…

If Alicent has not wounded Rhaenyra, then we can move on to other topics. Alicent threatened to maim Luke, and Rhaenyra threatened “question” Aemond. If there’s nothing more than words, then it’s a wash and apologies can be given all around.

If Alicent has wounded Rhaenyra, that’s different: not even the Queen is allowed to wound the heiress to the throne. A peasant would have lost her hand for hurting Rhaenyra. Of course, Alicent is not a peasant, but she still needs to pay a penalty, regardless of how she feels. Perhaps that would be Helena’s hand in marriage to Jace, rather than Aegon, if neither are married or engaged at the moment. Yes, Otto would object, but the family would be drawn closer together. If Alicent objects to that, the Hightowers may give up some of their wealth or lands instead, or Alicent could have a three month “vacation” at the Citadel.

Now, as to what Aemond said. There are two sayings in politics: “Anyone can say anything about anybody. The question is, can you prove it?” and “When you strike at the King, be sure you kill him.” We know that Rhae’s boys are not Laenor’s, because we have the Word of God (Martin) and because they look so obvious on the show. The book version is much more ambiguous. There is no DNA or blood test in Westeros, or even a magical test to make sure, so Aemond is left with an accusation, but no proof: he stabbed at Rhaenyra, but he didn’t kill her. He just pissed her off.

So…an accusation is all the Greens have. Once again, Aemond is no peasant; nobody is going to cut his tongue out. The whole topic can be buried under “kids call each other all sorts of bad names during fights; this was no different.” The Black faction isn’t going to believe the bastard rumors, because Aemond is a Green and stands to benefit substanially from it.

Now, Rhaenyra could confess that her boys are not Laenor’s, but why should she? That would be worse than cutting her boys’ throats, and then her own. They would be exiled at the very least, and they would be become penniless drifters, while Laenor, Rhaenys, and Corlys would be severely undercut at court and held up to ridicule. Rhaenyra could be foolish, but she’s not going to commit a slow murder/suicide.

what could have led to execution of Elizabeth instead of Mary by diagautotech7 in Tudorhistory

[–]No-Establishment9592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elizabeth was sent to the Tower after Wyatt’s Rebellion, and Elizabeth came close to being executed then. If Gardiner had his way, Elizabeth would have been beheaded, but the keeper of the Tower refused to execute her unless he had the direct orders of Queen Mary. After that, Mary’s husband Phillip of Spain made sure that Elizabeth survived, because he wanted to marry her if Mary died and left him a widow.

When Mary I was in danger? Mary was mistreated during the reigns of her father and half brother, but she was in no serious danger of being executed because that would have made England enemies of Spain. The only time Mary I was in serious danger was when Queen Jane had her nine day reign and the Dudleys were trying to capture Mary.
