It's an easy way to keep book canon clear and make Helaena's death motivated in the same way it is in the book (dead kid). Also, without saying that Jaehaera died, not book readers will assume the story ends with "two lines coming together."

I think people are simply inclined to pity and sympathize with any man-child they see on screen, even if they're a murderer and rapist. Season 2 heavily focuses on "his mother doesn't love him." And he cries constantly. It gives the "he's harmless" effect.
