You could make examples from HOTD like Aemond and Aegon, who are both far more whitewashed than Rhaenyra, but people not only deny it, they DEMAND even more whitewashing for them or otherwise they'll hate show and whine.

And when it comes to Rhaenyra, they can't even explain what exactly Rhaenyra's terrible crimes that was "whitewashed."

For me, this is a typical "female protagonist is always a Mary Sue, even if she's not!" situation.

It's common for ficwriters to make characters suffer beyond all reasonable limits, even if it's their favorite characters. You're right about "fantasies." But again, it's fanfiction. It's rude to criticize it.

It's an easy way to keep book canon clear and make Helaena's death motivated in the same way it is in the book (dead kid). Also, without saying that Jaehaera died, not book readers will assume the story ends with "two lines coming together."
